I ordered this book without hesitation because of the author: lead singer of Jars of Clay, an award-winning Christian band. It's a wonderful book filled with fantastic illustrations! It has a good story with a valuable lesson. But ...
I expected this to be a Christian book - not overtly religious, but I did expect it to at least mention God somewhere in the book. It doesn't. It could have been so easy, too! The author could have explained that the child was special because God intentionally made him just the way he is, but it doesn't assert as much.
This book could have been written by anyone. It echoes the mountain of other books seeking to increase a child's self-esteem. If you're looking for a secular title with the same message, I recommend you purchase "I Like Myself!" by Karen Beaumont. It's a much better, much more colorful title.
If you're looking for a Christian book with the same message, I recommend "You Are Special" or any of the books in the Wemmicks series by Max Lucado.
