Publisher's Description

Why were sinners so attracted to Jesus yet repelled by the religious? It had everything to do with the heart of Jesus. They sensed that Jesus was for them--not against them. When broken, sinful people feel repelled by Christians, we must assess whether our hearts reveal the heart of God or reflect the heart of the Pharisees. Through this engaging study of Jesus's encounters with imperfect people, combined with real-life stories of ordinary people having Christlike impact, readers will learn how to show unshockable love toward those around them.

Author Bio

John Burke is the author of No Perfect People Allowed and Soul Revolution, and the founder with his wife, Kathy, of Gateway Church in Austin, Texas. John has spoken in fifteen countries to hundreds of thousands of church leaders and Christians about reaching a postmodern, post-Christian culture. He and his family live in Austin, Texas.

    SUMMARY:

Only imperfect people can change the worldwhich means everyone has that chance to make an impact. Having studied Jesus and his interactions with people in the Bible- not just the words and messages of Jesus but the social interactions and attitudes towards those people by Jesus-John Burke shares short stories and real-life examples of people reaching out and witnessing to shocking people. The end result? All involved were impacted and brought closer to God

    A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:

Turning to those people who needed him most, Jesus surrounded himself with shockable people. Very relevant and relative to society today, shockable people still need love. John Burke does a wonderful job in this book of sharing love and acceptance of messy folks, resulting in a change in all. The message conveyed within was well-received due to the interesting and very plausible accounts written as well as the engaging style. A bit unsure of what to expect when I started reading, I am glad I pursued it. Definitely worth the time; definitely a book to be shared.

Unshockable Love by John Burke is the perfect book/bible study for any small group, individual, or Sunday School read. The headline for this book reads: How Jesus Changes the world through imperfect people. If we are all honest with ourselves we will all see our imperfections and how we can be perfected in Christ. This book leads us on our journey to realizing our brokenness, breaking down our expectations, and guiding us to accept Gods help in our lives.

Burke presents this book in a two part delivery: Part I Seeing through the eyes of Jesus and Part II On Mission with Jesus. Seeing through the eyes of Jesus means that we take everything we see with our eye and filter it through the lens of Jesus. He saw the need instead of the ick. He saw the good instead of the bad. He saw and didnt let His seeing affect His doing. Being on mission with Jesus means that we do for Him and with Him. We accept our limitations and allow Christ to fill in the gaps. We accept our humanness and our ordinariness and ask Christ to purify us. We simply come as we are and acknowledge that He will be Who He Is.

At the end of each chapter there is a Question and Action section. There are additional study ideas, small group resources, and Action guides available online at unshockablelove.com

    Not a perfect book

Any book that puts a quote from Mark Batterson on the cover has already made quite a statement about what you can expect to find on the inside. The back cover asks the question: Why were sinners so attracted to Jesus, yet repelled by the religious? It had everything to do with the heart of Jesus. They sensed Jesus was for them not against them. Burke makes too much out of the sinners ability to respond to God, and its evident just from the back cover. Well written, but not in-line with the totality of scripture. I received a free copy from Baker for my review.

In Unshockable Love, Pastor John Burke tells story after story of imperfect people showing others the way to Jesus. These imperfect people make such an impact because they themselves have been remarkably changed. I delighted in the endless stories of one life change resulting in several more. A domino effect than can be duplicated if we can see people the way Jesus sees them.

Simply put, Unshockable Love is a guide-book for reaching people for Christ by changing our own vision. I love how Pastor Burke reaffirms the value Christ places on each person. How He views each as a masterpiece, and that we should do the same. This book offers helpful direction in what should be the obvious. Perhaps one of the most helpful reminders is that of serving your neighbors. We dont have to go far to see people who are in need. They are all around us, at work, across the street, and in our schools.

I would easily recommend this book to any Bible Study or small group. It would easily start a conversation that could light a fire in the community in which you live. It is an excellent read and well-worth your time.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by its publisher BakerBooks in exchange for an honest review. I have not been compensated and all opinions are my own.

You dont have to be perfect before you reach out to Jesus. In fact we dont seem to have any record of Jesus using perfect people to further His mission. In Unshockable Love: How Jesus Changes the World through Imperfect People (Baker Books, 2013, originally published as Mud and the Masterpiece) John Burke paints a picture of how Jesus uses very imperfect people in a number of very impressive ways.

The book is a combination of bible stories, biblical truths, and stories of people like you and me. Many of the names have been changed, but there are also a number of people who allowed their stories to be shared under their own names. These are stories of how transformation occurs when people accept the help and the love that Jesus wants to offer.

And the title says it all. One imperfect person who experiences Gods grace has the potential to touch many more lives. Much of this book is taken from the authors experience at Gateway Church in Austin Texas. A lot of the rest of the story part of peoples post baptismal lives include serving in or leading one of the many programs or regularly scheduled activities.

Ordinary people, recipients of Gods grace, do extraordinary things. Weve all seen it happen, but many of us might not have realized what was happening. But this is not just a book about a program that works in Burkes culture and context; this is about growing and developing relationships that include Jesus.

I like the book because it challenges the reader to reach out to those who may or may not have experienced Christs love before. Reach out, share that love, build the relationship, and then watch the Kingdom grow as more and more lives are touched.

This book seems to build on another book No Perfect People Allowed by the same author.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a review.
