Mr. Hamilton Beckett, much to his chagrin, is the catch of the season, and all the eyes of New York society--all the female ones, at least--are on him. He has no plans to marry again, especially since his hands are full keeping his business afloat while raising his two children alone.
Eliza's hapless attempts to regain her fortune unexpectedly put her right in Hamilton's path. The discovery of a common nemesis causes them to join forces and, before she knows it, Eliza has a whole retinue of people helping her. Eliza's determination not to trust anyone weakens when everyone's antics and bumbling efforts to assist her make her wonder if there might be more important things than her fortune and independence. When all of Hamilton's and Eliza's best-laid plans fall by the wayside, it will take a riot of complications for them to realize that God just might have had a better plan in mind all along.

"Set in New York City circa 1880, Turano's historical romance has witty dialogue, a spunky heroine, a bounty of humor, and a fast-paced plot. There are wonderful secondary characters, too, including an ankle-biting boy, a relentlessly matchmaking mother, and a full cast of despicable villains. A Change of Fortune will make a delightful addition to any library." --Booklist (starred review)
"Turano's charming story of losing and gaining both wealth and love in 1880s New York City will certainly please fans of witty and classic romance stories."--RT Book Review
"[A] delightfully lighthearted debut novel."--Desert News
Emily4 Stars Out Of 5Surprisingly enjoyable!November 7, 2015EmilyQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I know, that my title, 'Surprisingly enjoyable!' does not do a lot to bolster confidence in finding a good read, but... Hey, it's truthful. I wasn't looking for an 1800s period piece, which was good because outside of horse-drawn transportation issues and status-based seating charts, this story isn't very 1880s. The characters' approach toward life would have little trouble fitting into a contemporary-timed novel. For me, that was a good thing because when if comes to fiction, I like books that will either play a romantic comedy movie in my head or transport me to another place, not dark thrillers or heart-wrenching, angst-filled love stories.
"A Change of Fortune" does a wonderful job delivering romantic comedy. The reader gets to laugh at obstacles and frustration rather than getting sucked into them.

She comes from a aristocrat lifestyle in England and lands in New York taking a job as a governess as she needs to support herself. Why she is in New York and her mission there is a funny, romantic love story. The characters in this novel are witty, enjoyable, and at times down right funny.
Pegg ThomasOssineke, MIAge: 45-54Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Whimsical StoryApril 25, 2015Pegg ThomasOssineke, MIAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Whimsical story about a young English woman who has lost her fortune and travels across the ocean to New York City to find the culprit who stole it. Lady Eliza Sumner takes a governess position, but she's found out soon enough when handsome Hamilton Beckett arrives on the scene - or at the scene - of the crime. The two partner with an unlikely cast of characters to save Eliza's fortune and solve a mystery from Hamilton's past.
A fun story with engaging characters. It would have gotten a 4-star review from me if the characters had been more authentic to the time period. There is quite a bit of modern language and behavior in this one. It doesn't spoil the story, but for someone who loves the historical aspect of a historical romance, it got in the way.
