Allen explores Ezra-Nehemiah as a single literary text made up of three parts telling the story of three missions and the opposition they meet with. Wise and insightful, Leslie Allen has written a commentary that illuminates these texts and their intended message.Esther is a story about a young girl who becomes queen. Laniak's thoughtful commentary examines this narrative as a story with many levels of meaning. Esther is about the minority Jewish community in the dependent state of Diaspora, navigating a precarious existence in two worlds, and it is about the triumph of right over wrong, of God's people over their enemies.

RICHARD HOLTClovis, NMAge: 45-54Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5A good overview of Ezra - Esther.April 18, 2011RICHARD HOLTClovis, NMAge: 45-54Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 3Allen wrote the material addressing Ezra and Nehemiah. Laniak wrote the section on Esther. Both authors have provided a solid overview of books they cover in this volume. I found the end-notes to be particularly interesting. The introductions to the three books are very brief. The commentary itself is also brief and mostly provides assistance in following the flow of the text. Some comments on the Hebrew language are also provided. Laniak has written on Esther prior to completing this work. Allen is a well respected moderately conservative scholar who is a prolific writer. This not Allen's best work, nor is this the best commentary on these three OT books. Nonetheless, it is still a worthwhile read.
