ChristianBookPreviews.comAnother book in the I Can Read series for beginning level 1 readers is The Princess Twins and the Puppy by Mona Hodgson. In this episode, the twins Abby and Emma are having a tea party in their backyard when suddenly their puppy starts trying to get their attention. They yell at him and chase him away until after they have finished their tea. Then they are ready to play with the puppy, but by now he is lost. They search everywhere for him with no success, until they hear his whimpering and barking coming from down in the deep, dark castle basement. Emma is too afraid to go into the darkness. Abby is afraid, too, but she prays to Jesus to make her brave. Boldly, feeling Jesus at her side, Abby takes a lantern, goes into the basement, and rescues her puppy from where he had fallen into some old boxes and could not escape. Abby brings him upstairs and the girls spend the afternoon playing with him.
The book begins with a long-quoted passage from Deuteronomy 31:6 that begins with, "Be strong and courageous." The artwork by Red Hansen is not overly sophisticated, but it is colorful, and the expressions on the faces of the twins do a good job of conveying fear, regret, excitement, and love. Children will get practice at learning to read simple words while also gaining a lesson about placing trust in the Lord. Dr. Dennis E.
