There will be lots of bears who will need help today. I can feel it in my bones. Follow me, Scouts!" said Papa. It's time for the Bear Scouts to earn their Good Deed Merit Badge. But things get a little crazy as scoutmaster, Papa Bear looks for someone who really needs their helping hands.and instead causes quite a lot of trouble in Bear Country.
Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962. Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears. Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too. Though Stan died in 2005, and Jan in 2012, Mike continues to create the delightful Bear adventures from their studio in Pennsylvania, in an area that looks much like the sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country.
The Berenstain Bears Hurry to Help by Jan Berenstain and son Mike is an updated attempt to show the Good Samaritan story in action. Papa Bear, as scoutmaster, takes Brother and Sister Bear and their cousin out for the day to perform a good deed. Unfortunately, every time they take action, they only cause trouble. Helping an old woman across the street makes her miss her bus, and trying to help a farmer only causes his tractor to break down. Finally, toward the end of the day Papa Bear slips off of a cliff and sustains a lot of bruises. He cannot walk. The three Bear Scouts get a wheelbarrow, put Papa inside, and somehow transport him all the way home. Mama Bear announces that in rescuing Papa, the Bear Scouts have earned their Good Deed Merit Badge. They have acted as good Samaritans. Everyone is happy.
The book begins by quoting Philippians 2:4, "Each of you should look not only to your own interests but also to the interests of others." Other verses of scripture are quoted throughout the telling of the story. The brightly colored drawings and easy-to-read words will make this a book that 4- to 7-year-olds will enjoy time and again. -- Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
