It is the year AD 62. The notorious Roman emperor Nero orders Marco Junio Vitalis, a seasoned military general, to assist him in a most peculiar legal proceeding. Vitalis interrogates an elderly Jewish fisherman called Peter, who many years earlier had been a close friend of a man known as Jesusthe same Jesus condemned to death in Jerusalem by Pontius Pilate. Loyal to the emperor, Vitalis determines to do everything in his power to expose the truth around this strange new religious sect before it undermines Roman rule. So it is, through the course of interrogation between veteran soldier and detainee, that a story emerges that will shake the very foundations of the Roman Empire. Now making its first-ever appearance in English, this award-winning, meticulously researched Spanish bestseller transports readers back to ancient Rome … to a culture far removed from ours yet with striking similarities … and a time of tumultuous upheaval where the stakes are high for followers of Christ.
DyscypleSaint Albans, WVAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Accurate tellingDecember 29, 2012DyscypleSaint Albans, WVAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The author did a very good job of retelling the Gospel of Mark (a truncated version), as told by Peter to several persons, including a fictional character named Vitalis. I am not going to give a synopsis of the book, for the description does that.
I will say that this is a wonderful example of a fictional, historical, and an apologetic work. It incorporates all three qualities into its few and easy to read pages. Its history and biblical accounts are dramatically accurate, and its fictional aspect is engaging and emotionally drawing.
I highly recommend this book to all. However, one must recognize the truth & historicity in the book from the fiction--for that, sometimes one must only think, but other cases will call for research. Do not take something the author wrote as fact until verifying it. That is the only caution I have.
