Publisher's Description

If you have struggled personally against the powerful draw of pornography, or if you have ever tried to help someone fighting this battle, you know how hard it is to break free. But real freedom isn’t found by trying harder to change. Nor is it found in a particular method or program. Only Jesus Christ has the power to free people from the enslaving power of pornography.

In Finally Free, Dr. Heath Lambert, a leader in the biblical counseling movement, lays out eight gospel-centered strategies for overcoming the deceitful lure of pornography. Each chapter clearly demonstrates how the gospel applies to this particular battle and how Jesus can move readers from a life of struggle to a life of purity.

If you or someone you care about is fighting this battle, there is good news: No matter how intense or long-standing the struggle, Jesus Christ can, will, and does set people free from the power of pornography.

Enslavement to pornography is perhaps the least enjoyable topic for Christians to bring up, let alone discuss. This means ironically that it's extremely important to bring up and discuss. And we should be thankful for books which do just that, like Heath Lambert's Finally Free. If you're perhaps thinking instead, "Another book about porn and Christians?! This is ridiculous!", the blunt truth is that since immorality is such an epidemic in the church and the lives of the Christians in them, it requires constant attention. It's perfectly appropriate for believers around the world to address the porn problem, both from the pulpit and in print. And I frankly wish we would more often.

What I appreciate most about Finally Free is that Heath Lambert constantly speaks to the only answer to one's enslavement to sexual sin: the grace of Jesus Christ. Without it, a Christian will never escape porn's shackles. Heath doesn't stray from that fact for a moment. The beginning chapter presents an interesting diagram, where God's grace lies at the center [as the foundation to this answer], and eight specific concepts "point out" as weapons which the grace-enabled Christian can use to fight his/her unique battle. Those weapons are sorrow, accountability, a radical attitude, confession, one's spouse (or singleness), humility, gratitude, and one's relationship with Christ. This is the makeup of Finally Free. Each chapter brings a no-nonsense message about the [porn] problem, and sterling encouragements about the possible effects of the wise use of the highlighted weapon.

I couldn't have predicted, however, the extents that Lambert suggests in the chapter surrounding radical measures. I fully support the idea of someone doing whatever it takes to be severed from bondage to pornography, but would have never considered changing my job, or handing my car keys to someone. Yet given the chance to stew on this for a while, it makes sense. Whatever it takes means whatever it takes, even if it seems strange. The cost to follow Jesus should never matter to us. Lambert took his material straight out of Matthew 5/Mark 9, where Jesus explicitly commands a radical approach to mortifying sin. Such measures also aren't intended to be needed forever, of course.

Chapters 7 and 8 were the most thought-provoking to me. Chapter 7 (humility) challenged me about the notion that watching pornography, or fantasizing, is a manifestation of one's pride. Lambert proposes that men indulge in porn especially because they want to see women portrayed in ways that God has expressly forbidden. Instead we ought to regard such actors and actresses, or the objects of our fantasies, as people who need us to represent Christ to them, not take advantage of them. It should also be viewed as a selfish use of time, which could be used instead to serve others. There are many other details concerning using humility as weapon, but the idea in general spoke to me. And the same for gratitude (chapter 8), which isn't practiced when watching porn or thinking about it. In being thankful for what we do have, we enjoy an attitude of gladness that's able to dispel any desire to see sexual depravity. It's fascinating how Heath references Ephesians 5:3-4 (which I also do in another article: Not Even A "Hint"), emphasizing the three last words, but rather thanksgiving, to drive this home. His point is that the apostle Paul exhorts us to be thankful (grateful) to have victory over the sins mentioned in the prior verse (sexual immorality, impurity, greed, obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse joking). Makes sense to me!

The final chapter caught me a little bit by surprise. It's intimately connected to the introductory chapter, but I won't divulge how so. It helps you appreciate even more how Lambert handled the material between the two as far as all the pearls of wisdom Christians can benefit from as they fight daily for moral purity. It's also interesting that Joshua Harris, a well-respected author [on dating and sexuality], was responsible for the book's Foreword. Harris hints in a way that Finally Free blows his sex isn't the problem, lust is book out of the water, and that he would recommend Lambert's book to anyone struggling with porn addiction.

My critique of Finally Free is ultimately this; if your life is consumed by pornography and you want a book that will flood your mind with the truth of grace and also not mince words about what you're doing, absolutely pick up Finally Free. But others can certainly read it as well. If you're looking for extra encouragements in the rough and tumble of the daily battle, as I always do, read the book. If you want to help someone else addicted to immorality, Finally Free is a wonderful tool! And thank you brother Lambert, for keeping this deadly issue fresh in our minds.

"Finally Free - fighting for purity with the power of grace" by Heath Lambert challenges the reader to grow in sexual purity. He especially writes for everyone struggling with pornography in his or her lives. At the same time, most of his strategies can be transferred to confront many other sins in our lives.

The foundation for his approach to live a life of purity is based on the saving grace of God. After introducing his starting point, he explores eight main strategies to grow in purity: sorrow, accountability, radical measures, confession, your spouse (or your singleness), humility, gratitude, and a dynamic relationship with Jesus. Lambert fills his chapters with stories of people he has met that have dealt with the challenge of purity in their lives and illustrates his points with real life examples. Each chapter is followed by a few practical points to challenge the reader to put the strategy discussed into practice and to think some more about the points presented.

The book is easy to follow and engaging. The stories make it easy to see how the different strategies work in real life and they help the reader to put them into practice. The author writes in a clear manner and it is easy to understand his points. I really appreciate the positive attitude of the author who is trying to encourage and support his struggling readers. He challenges the reader in an uplifting way to face the obstacles in his or her own life. I would definately reccommend this book.

Recently i returned to reading, and to a wonderful resource known as Booksneeze.com, which offers the opportunity to read and review books that have been recently published. I was reading the titles, and so many jumped at me as something i should be taking the time to enjoy. But every now and then a book comes along that seems like it would help to expand both my husband and my understanding of issue, and struggles common to us. While neither of us have struggled with the deep addiction of pornography, we have each witnessed good people fall into this trap, and become entangled. We offer to pray, but there seemed to be more that can be done. We selected Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of God by Heath Lambert as one such text to help expand our ability to minister to others.

Heath compiled a nicely organized book on how to work through breaking the shackles of the addiction to pornography by hitting the root cause. Like a carpenter or craftsman, Heath begins to add tools that will help, will make a difference. Some of what he wrote was not startling, yet it was good reminder that we are each our brother's keeper, and we should spend effort building into each other, looking out for each other and helping others through times of struggle and temptation by offering substitutions.

The book starts out slow, and i found myself frustrated with the constant repetition of statements, much like the annoying person that keeps asking "did you get that?" after every sentance. But pushing through those first chapters it was well worth the read. I would recommend this primarily for men, however the information is universal, and could easily be applied to other issues we battle in this christian life.

Finally Free is a book on dealing with the sin of pornography. It is written specifically to men who are struggling with an addiction to pornography or to people trying to help men who are. But this book is different from other books that I have read on the topic of pornography. Most books spend a good deal of time describing pornography and how big a problem it is in our culture. However, if you are already struggling with this issue, you don't need a history or civics lecture, you need Jesus to help you conquer your sin. And that is where this book begins and ends - with Jesus.

Also, the best part about this book is that it doesn't just apply to pornography. It applies to any sin in your life that you are continually struggling with. Perhaps it is gambling or drinking or even something less obvious, like joining in with inappropriate conversations at work. Whatever it is, this book teaches how to deal with any sin issue that you are struggling with by relying on Christ and His saving grace.

Heath Lambert gives clear evidence of Jesus' love for us and clear scripture backing it up. He shows how God wants us to behave and how we can accomplish it. He also gives very clear practical advice on how to deal with the sin of pornography and gives examples to show how it looks in reality. At the end of each chapter are a list of questions and tasks to help you apply what you learned in that chapter. They are very real and practical questions that make you deal honestly with your sin and level with God on dealing with it.

This book is a terrific resource for someone stuck in the mire of pornography. However, it is also a great book for anyone dealing with a specific sin that is a source of great struggle in his/her life.

Everyone knows someone who is struggling with addiction to pornography. Most would like to help. Many do not know how. Those who are enslaved to their sin despair of ever finding a way out. Heath Lambert has written a book that seeks to break the chains of lust by means of a simple word: grace.

In this book, Dr. Lambert exposes the false belief that those enslaved to pornography often assume: I can overcome this by trying harder. Dr. Lambert shows us that it is by God's grace that we can be freed from pornography and points us to eight specific ways that God's grace is manifest in our lives to help us overcome this sin. The appendix consists of help for those whose loved one is struggling with pornography.

Although this book specifically targets pornography, I believe it could be adapted to counsel those who struggle with any besetting sin. I found this book to be thoroughly biblical in its approach and practical in its application. Dr. Lambert tackles each chapter with a pastor's care and a doctor's precision. As I read this book, I found my heart moved by the grace that God has given us not only to be saved from the eternal penalty of sin but also the grace He has given us to subdue sin in our mortal bodies as we grow in holiness.

This book needs to be in the library of every pastor. I will recommend this book first and without any hesitation to those who ask. I cannot always say that with books on this topic. Some books focus too much on the sin and end up ensnaring some in renewed temptation. This book seeks to take the focus off of the sin and points the reader to the Saviour. Thank you Dr. Lambert and Zondervan for producing such a valuable resource for those who hurt and for those who want to help. May God be glorified for years to come by this book.
