Most commentaries take you on a one-way trip from the 20th century to the first century---but leave you to make the return journey on your own. While it is important to focus on the original meaning of Scripture, it is also necessary to discuss its contemporary application. This unique commentary on John offers you a ''round trip,'' explaining not only what the Bible meant but how these eternal truths from another time and culture apply to the similar-yet-different needs of today. 592 pages, hardcover from Zondervan.
This commentary on John helps us with both halves of the interpretive task. It shows readers how to bring the ancient message of John into a modern context, and it explains not only what the book of John meant to its original readers but also how it can speak powerfully today.

As a full-time minister, I appreciate the thoughtful application of the text this commentary offers. Burge rightfully sees in John's gospel challenges to our religious forms and our Christian walk, encouraging us to a spiritual encounter with the Bread of Heaven. Tough texts are recognized as such and offer more than cursory treatment (ie: 7:37f, 7:53-8:12, 20:21ff). The scholarship is solid and direction for further study is helpful. This work draws the reader into a thirst for more of John's Gospel and ultimately it inspires belief in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, in whose name we have life.

I absolutely love this commentary. Easy to read. Deep enough to stimulate. And great for building sermons or preparing for Bible class. Well worth the money.
