Publisher's Description

Tucked into Abraham’s biography is the story of Hagar, a young Egyptian slave with whom Abraham had a son named Ishmael.  Hagar stood out because she was wounded—not physically, but in ways that were as emotionally and spiritually painful as any injury to a body would be. Some wounds were provoked by her own bad behavior, but others were inflicted by those who considered themselves God’s people.

Anne Graham Lotz too has been wounded by God’s people. Some wounds have been deeper than others, some have come out of nowhere, and still others have been provoked by her own behavior, but all of the wounds have been deeply painful. They seemed to hurt even more when the wounders wrapped their behavior in a semblance of religion or piety.

As Hagar’s story unfolds, you will discover that wounded people often become wounders themselves. While Anne identifies with the wounded, the unpleasant reality is that she also identifies with the wounders, because she has been one, too.  She knows from experience that wounding is a cycle that needs to be broken.  And by God’s grace, it can be.

Many have had similar experiences. And perhaps you are among those who have been so deeply hurt that you have confused God’s imperfect people with God. Maybe you have even run away from God as a result.  Or perhaps you have been a wounder to the extent that you are living in a self-imposed exile, believing you are unworthy to be restored to a warm, loving relationship with God or with God’s people. Whatever your hurts may be, Wounded by God’s People helps you to begin a healing journey—one that enables you to reclaim the joy of God’s presence and all the blessings God has for you.

God loves the wounded.  And the wounders.

I really enjoyed this book. As a pastors wife, I too have been wounded by church people. Her incorporation of Hagar's story added to the points that were being made. Well worth your time to read this wonderful book!

I'm still reading this book and really enjoying it. Mrs. Lotz is showing me a side to the Hagar story I've never seen. I like that she is so honest about her own hurts....both those received and given.

Expected this to be a book on how to witness to people hurt by the institutional church, to draw them back to the Lord, but instead its quite personal, addressing individuals hurts in the author's life and your own. Far less "solutions" than I'd hoped, just compassion with a tone of unresolved hurt on her part.

Anne Graham Lotz takes us on a journey through her own hurts at the hands of God's people. She shares that healing and forgiveness in the arms of God. Prior to reading this book, it had never crossed my mind that one of the most reknowned evangelists of our day and his family had endured deep wounds from the fiery darts of the church. The reality is that the evil inside the church can be just as much an equal opportunity employer as the world outside the church.

Ms. Lotz uses the Biblical example of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar to guide the reader on the journey. Prior to reading this book, if someone mentioned Abraham my thoughts would go to his being the Father of the God's Chosen People or to his remarkable faith when God asked him to go up the mount to sacrifice Isaac. I must admit that I had never seen Abraham as a man that did the wounding. In my mind, he led people to faith rather than being a stumbling block to one's faith. However, when we take a moment to look at the situation through the eyes of Hagar, we see a wounder of the heart rather than a man after God's own heart.

Mrs. Lotz does not leave us in the pain, but shows how God can faithfully bring healing, forgiveness, and restoration. She demonstrates how whether the wounds come at the hands of the world or God's people that His grace is sufficient to heal.
