Publisher's Description

How can we move our churches to become relevant, responsive, and reflective of the global community? That’s the question that Eric Michael Bryant poses in Not Like Me, formerly titled Peppermint-Filled Piñatas. With stories, observations, and thought-provoking suggestions, this book maps the way beyond ethnic, racial, and cultural barriers to the communities that Jesus wants us to have.

I bought this book because it was recommended on Carols Whittaker's blog. While raised in a multi-cultural urban centre, I know I have a lot to learn about race relations. This book doesn't focus exclusively on race, but it broader in its scope, talking about how was insulate ourselves from people who are different, whether that be age, socio-economic status, political stance, race or even religion. He provided real stories and practical, Biblical perspectives on how to break down our own fears and actually make friends with people who are different than us, without an agenda, yet through the love of Christ. It really convicted me that my Christian bubble - which is so easy to stay in when there's just so many of us! - is un-Christlike. I had thought it would talk more about race, but the diversity in its scope has made me realize the issue is greater (at least in my life) than just race. Very challenging.
