Davis brings cultural and historical colour to the task of interpretation and adds a pastor's heart for personal application. You will find a point of contact with the lives of Samuel, Saul, Jonathan and David as Davis answers the question 'What does God seek when he looks on the heart?' Davis presents simple exposition of the literary and theological character of the text in a bright and fascinating way.

He faithfully exegetes a passage while giving sometimes humorous, and always insightful, illustrations and commentary. His work is filled with enjoyment at the same time it digs deeply into your soul. This - and any other Ralph Davis work - is well worth your time and money. "Buy the truth and sell it not."

Austin Nelson5 Stars Out Of 5Learn About God!January 2, 2011Austin NelsonQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have read through this commentary two times, and have really enjoyed it. I must admit I did not know very much about this book of God's Word, but since I've read this, 1 Samuel has become one of my favorite books in the Old Testament.
Dr. Davis does a tremendous job explaining the text, but doing it in a way that makes it fun, interesting, and practical for every day life. I cannot recommend this commentary enough.
Ed Garboczi5 Stars Out Of 5July 21, 2007Ed GarbocziWell-written, interesting to read commentary. Reading a few chapters of 1 Samuel, then reading through some of Davis' book was a great way to spend my personal devotional time, and an interesting way to study the Bible. Highly recommended. I am going to try his other Old Testament works.
Brad Eckerley5 Stars Out Of 5May 18, 2002Brad EckerleyExcellent commentary that digs at the heart of the text. One of the best commentaries I own. I promptly purchased every commentary he has written (Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel).
