The past Janeal thought had burned away is rising from the ashes. Years ago, the Gypsy Kumpania where Janeal Mikkado lived was attacked by outsiders. With her best friend about to be consumed by a fire, Janeal had two options: try to save her friend--at serious risk to her own life--or disappear with the million dollars that she had just discovered . . . But the past is quickly coming back to haunt her. Both the best friend and the boyfriend that she was sure were dead have reappeared in her life, as has someone who knows about the money. Theres a debt to be paid for the money she found, but theres an even greater debt she must face--and if the chaff isnt burned from her own heart, it will consume her.
Dekker and Healy follow their collaboration in Kiss with another odyssey into the paranormal that transports readers into another dimension and returns them head spinning, never to see their own world in quite the same way. Two young friends are propelled out of their Gypsy clan when shady characters burn their kumpania (community). The girls lose family and friends in the fire and grow up separated from each other and the boy they both loved. One is faced with an impossible choice that haunts her until the girls meet 15 years later, where a reality-bender twist is revealed. Readers who enjoy allegorical stories that are rooted in the Bible will find dozens of connections, some force-fed (“He was the Jesus to Janeal’s Judas”) and others unorthodox but mind-zinging (“ 'Who can imagine what God and Satan discuss? Certainly Job had no idea God was gambling with his life.’ ”) Christian fiction lovers who enjoy romantic interest, frantic chases by sinister figures of biblical proportions, suspense, and the old-fashioned joy of suspending disbelief will find this new dynamic writing duo, once a writer-editor combo, fiery hot. It really shows how hard one choice can be and how that one choice can affect the future. I absolutely loved it. :) 5 out of 5 stars
Reviewed by Marti (KS), September 02, 2009 Burn, by Ted Dekker and Erin Healy, follows closely in the vein of Kiss. Another page turner for those with a love of mystery and suspense novels, and those who love romance novels.
Janeal Mikkado is on the run from her past. After she witnessed the slaughter of her kumpania, she hid herself away with a million dollars and left her past completely sealed off from the rest of her life. However, her past comes back to haunt her when she realizes she's not the lone survivor of her kumpania that she thought she was. Now, the decision to face the past or turn away from it threatens to bring her world she's built crashing down. With classic Dekker bravado, it throws the reader into the story leaving them reeling with all of the plot twists and turns. And, as presented in Kiss, Erin's writing shows the softer side of Janeal; of the love that she left behind, and the redemptive power that comes from God alone. This book I highly recommend to everyone! Write a review of Burn
