Publisher's Description

Confused and intimidated by the complexities of homeschooling, many sincere parents never get past the "thinking about it" stage. Now Lisa Whelchel - herself a homeschooling mother of three - introduces fifteen real families and shows how they overcome the challenges of their unique homeschooling situations. This nuts-and-bolts approach deals with common questions of time management, teaching weaknesses, and outside responsibilities, as well as children's age variations, social and sports involvement, learning disabilities, and boredom. Seeing a wide variety of successfully homeschooling families in action will give parents the confidence to make their own dream of home-based education a reality.

"Written in a conversational tone, So You're Thinking About Homeschooling takes the reader to a series of households to 'talk' to them about their methods and reasons for homeschooling. Think of it as a book of case studies in the abstract, as Ms. Whelchel has created these fictional families from a mass of interviews done with real people. She has selected several scenarios to explore with the reader, from grandparents to working single moms. This is an excellent resource for those who are just beginning to research homeschooling, or who are unsure if their lifestyle will work with its demands. Not too much detail on the "How?"s, but lots of inspiration for the "Who me?"s." -- Stacy Oliver, Christian Book Previews

I loved this book! I don't like to read normally, but this book was hard to put down. For someone who is thinking about homeschooling, the different family structures and methods of teaching are clearly laid out and very realistic. This is definitely one to read if you are thinking about homeschooling your family.

Wonderful book! I sat and read it all within one day ... I just couldn't put it down. I loved how the author described each form of homeschooling so clearly and easily (didn't feel like was reading a manual)and I ESPECIALLY loved how almost every "family" had a messy house! Highly recommend this book.

My copy came in the mail yesterday and I ended up staying up most of the night reading it. I could not put this book down. I can't wait to read more books by Lisa.

So You're Thinking About Homeschooling is the perfect book if you're considering homeschooling or simply want to know more about the different methods available. Lisa Whelchel (formerly Blair of The Facts of Life sitcom) sends you on a fieldtrip where you'll meet her homeschooling family and 14 fictitious families she created using extensive research. Once leaving Lisa's house, the "host" of each chapter comes from a different family who speaks to you as if you're right there. They are from various backgrounds and employ different schooling methods, such as Classical, Eclectic, Traditional, Unschooling, the Principle Approach, Accelerated Education, Literature-Based Learning, Robinson Self-Teaching Method, Charlotte Mason Method, and Unit Studies. As you talk to Lisa's "friends," you'll quickly see that most kids are not super-achievers and homeschooling often takes hard work and sacrifice. Although written with a Christian influence, there is no preaching or put-downs of the public school system. Plus, all living situations are common to everyday life so anyone can identify with them. So You're Thinking About Homeschooling is an excellent book that will bring you closer to a decision and/or method for your family.

This book is a great buy for those looking into homeschooling! Lisa brings the reader right into her own home and shares the struggles and rewards of choosing to homeschool. Her honesty and conversational writing style makes this a fun and easy read yet full of information. With so many options for homeschoolers, it is easy for a newbie to get lost in the overwhelming task of choosing curriculum, defining schedules, and figuring out what's going to work for their family. Lisa tackles this problem by introducing the reader to various homeschool families to get an intimate view of a variety of situations, reasons to homeschool, teaching methods, learning styles, and so much more. I now feel empowered as I was able to identify with some of the stories, and I now have a more defined direction as I look towards homeschooling my two kids.
