Product Description

Wherever you look, it's easy to see that atheism today is more popular than ever. Popularized in books and films by Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens, the "new atheism" is now widely respected and drawing people away from the redeeming work of Christ. Why has this new brand of atheism taken hold? What can Christians do to combat it? Dr. Albert Mohler, one of the leading Christian thinkers of our day, brings helpful perspectives and keen insight for understanding, challenging and countering this latest atheistic thinking. He explores the newest strain of atheism, the cultural conditions that have bred it and how Christians should respond.

I found it a concise description of the new atheism, about which I knew very little. It is a good introduction to the subject that I would like to pursue further. I may have to read this book again to grasp better the topic.

With clarity, simplicity, and insight, Al Mohler provides an overview of the New Atheism movement spearheaded by Dawkins, Dennett, Hitchens, and Harris. He notes what is new about the New Atheism when compared to older forms of atheism, and provides the main arguments each of these men make. In the third chapter he brings us up to date on the responses by evangelical academics like McGrath and Plantinga, showing their benefits and weaknesses. Lastly he shows how liberal theologians are responding to the New Atheism and ends with the conclusion that orthodox Christians must meet the challenge of both the New Atheism and trendy vague "spirituality" that many embrace. Well-written, concise, and non-technical, Mohler's book is a much needed introduction to the challenge the New Atheism poses to Christian belief.
