Moo introduces each book with a series of five similar questions: To whom was it written? Who wrote it? When? Why? and What? He then divides the commentary itself into Letter Opening, Letter Body, and Letter Closing for each book, addressing the introductory thanksgiving of Philemon as well. The volume ends with thorough indexes of names, subjects, scripture references, and extrabiblical literature.
Informed, methodologically astute, evangelical, and displaying a careful balance between good scholarship and pastoral concern, The Letters to the Colossians and to Philemon is readily accessible, offering something for everyone 2; teacher or student, pastor or parishioner, scholar or layperson.
The Pillar New Testament Commentary series is quickly establishing itself as the premier mid-level commentary series on the English text of Scripture but written with full awareness of the Greek and all the key exegetical debates that busy pastors and teachers need to know about. Volumes such as James Edwards on Mark, D. A. Carson on John, David Peterson on Acts, Peter O'Brien on Ephesians, Douglas Moo on Colossians and Philemon and also on James, Gene Green on Thessalonians, Peter Davids on 2 Peter and Jude and Colin Kruse on the Letters of John are as fine as any 'competitors' of the same scope in print. And more of the same quality are continuing to appear.
Informed, evangelical, methodologically astute, and displaying a careful balance between good scholarship and pastoral concern earmarks of the Pillar New Testament Commentary series as a whole Moos Letters to the Colossians and to Philemon will offer insights to a wide range of readers, from teachers and students, to pastors and parishioners, to scholars and laypersons.

Moo is exceptional at presenting a broad range of hermeneutical options and scholarly differences in the text and clearly explains why he lands where he does. He is masterful at wrapping practical Christian virtue around complex theological constructions. I highly recommend this work to anyone who would consider working through the original Greek to gain a clear understanding of how (and why) the letter was put together.
