Product Description

Leonard Sweet--cultural historian, futurist, preacher, and preeminent thinker--firmly believes we live in a postmodern, pre-Christian society fraught with challenges, dangers, critical choices, and above all, tremendous potential for the church. The outcome will depend on our response to today's flood of change that threatens to sweep us away. SoulTsunami outlines ten cultural changes that are already happening around us and suggests practical ways to communicate God's unchanging truth to our changing world.

Sweet organizes this book into ten chapters that he calls "Life Rings". Each chapter examines one aspect of postmodern culture that Sweet believes the church needs to consider and respond to if we are going to survive the tidal wave of cultural change that is heading our way. The chapters are organized into three sections: one called "Or What?" that states the issue for the church; one calles "So What?" that suggests ways to address the problem; and a "Say What?" section of questions to think about and exercises to do in response to the chapter. Sweet draws his anecdotes from a HUGE range of sources, and I found the footnotes to be almost as interesting as the text! Though I don't agree with all of Sweet's conclusions, I thought the book was insightful and provocative, and well worth reading. Unfortunately, I felt that Sweet sometimes tries too hard to be "hip" with his terminology, which might turn off some of the more tradition-minded pastors that I think he would like to reach with this book.
