Over the years here at CBD, my daughter Sophia and I have recommended materials to guide you in the rewarding pastime of nature study. Feeling inspired, perhaps you sprang forward with the best teacher’s intentions. Yet, the task of turning a blank book into a nature journal proved too formidable. Let me encourage you. I think you will find My Nature Journal more doable. It introduces children to basic scientific information about what can be found in woodland, meadow, pond, etc., while providing pages to record their personal observations. A few pages of illustrated text on each subject are followed by an assignment. Children fill in their thoughts after readings such as “Animal Tracks I Found,” “My Favorite Fall Leaves,” “Birds I Have Seen,” “My Moon Phase Chart.”

Assignments vary; I like that. Some require a scavenger hunt; others give time for thoughtful reflection—”Nature is special to me because . . .” or “My poem on the sunset.” My Nature Journal puts the powers of a child’s curiosity to work, while preserving his sense of wonder for the natural world. Your young investigators will look forward to the “schoolwork” they’ll get to do outside. Use this book with Pocketful of Pinecones for a full year of nature study. A great book for all little adventurers. Well laid out and easy to use. Although it is recommended for eight and up, my son is six, we had a great time at the shore with it.

I loved this book the first time I saw it! My 8-year old loved it, too. It is just the right size for carrying on a walk through the woods and has enough variety to cover all seasons and weather. After going on one nature walk with this journal, my daughter continually asks to go on another, and another, and another.
