Best Little Stories From World War II is a collection of more than 150 true stories that bring to life the triumph and tragedy of the second world war. Serving as a window into the lives of those who experienced the war -- soldiers and sailors, heroes and villains, leaders and ordinary people -- the book recounts in human terms the reality of a war that gripped the entire world. These inspiring, poignant, ironic, and sometimes tragic stories and anecdotes make World War II come alive with the thoughts and feelings of those who were there.

Tell us a little about yourself. As a young boy whose uncle was serving abroad
(the CBI theater) in World War II, I used to
retype war stories appearing in the newspapers. I
later grew up to become a newspaper reporter,
then the first editor of Military History and
World War II magazines, then columnist for
Military History (22 years in all as either
editor or columnist)and nowadays author (together
with my wife Ingrid) of historical books, all
appearing under the signatory title Best Little
Stories from... We started out self publishing,
but after selling 72,000 copies of our first
three historical books under our own steam,we
latched onto Cumberland House of Nashville,
Tenn., as publisher of our growing series, now up
to eight books in all---three on the Civil War
and one each on WWII, the American Revolution,
the White House, the Wild West and Virginia. My
wife Ingrid writes about the women in each
historical period covered.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? An appreciation for the amazing sacrifices made
by those fighting for good against evil in World
War II. An appreciation of our heroes in that
war, well known and totally obscure. An
appreciation also for the unity of purpose among
those fighting for the good. An appreciation for
how hugely widespread and dangerous that war was
to all civilized peoples, and thus a reminder of
the dangers we now face from evil reconstituted
in our own day as the terrorists our wonderful
young men and women in uniform face in the Mid-
East and Afghanistan...and who knows where else
in the months and years ahead.
