This level contains a student-directed workbook only. David Quine, author of Making Math Meaningful, says: "The math instruction of children should proceed on two lines. The young child should begin to learn the basic facts and to understand math concepts, and his understanding should be well in advance of his skill to compute. The scale should be tipped in favor of a concrete understanding of math concepts so that he can think mathematically."
