Children will enjoy hearing about the journey of two immigrant Jewish girls' trip to America. Making the journey alone, the two comfort each other during the storms, make their way through Ellis Island to finally be reuinted with their father. Charming illustrations and simple, but informative prose makes the story of Mnnushka and Tanya a wonderful introductions to a study on immigration or Ellis Island. 32 pages, hardcover with dust jacket.
Set at the turn of the century, this sensitively told story, based on the true story of the author's own mother's journey to America, follows the journey of two young sisters as they travel from their small village in Russia to join their papa in New York. In her lively text, Edith Tarbescu communicates the hopes and fears of the two young immigrants. Expressive illustrations capture the many extraordinary moments of the sisters' transatlantic journey including their glorious reunion with Papa, made possible with the help of a pair of special Sabbath candlesticks.
"...colorful illustrations capture all the confusion of the meigrant experience, as well as the exhilaration." Kirkus Reviews

Author: Edith Tarbescu Located in: Placitas, N.M. Submitted: May 21, 2003 Tell us a little about yourself. I wear two hats: children's book author and
writer of plays for adults. I recently did two
school visits in Belfast and came home inspired.
I wrote several short stories based on my visit to
Ireland.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope children will ask their parents and
grandparents about their heritage and value
their family memories and traditions.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I'm the author of "Annushka's Voyage." I was
inspired to write this book after the death of
my parents. It was then that I fully appreciated
the hardships involved in journeying to a new
country, especially in steerage, where
conditions were abysmal. There's a sepia-colored
photograph in the back of my book taken shortly
after my mother and her sister arrived at Ellis
Island from Russia. Please check out my website:
