Have you ever heard about the ancient hymns and Psalms of the Reformation? If you have, Mr. Pipes and Psalms and Hymns of the Reformation is a book you’ll enjoy.
Douglas Bond, the outstandingly gifted author of this work of art, slowly pulls you into the tale of two children and their elderly friend following the footsteps of some of the greatest hymn and psalm writers of all time. The author includes hymnists such as: Martin Luther, Phillip Nicolai, Johann Michael Altenburg and many, many more.
The title of the book, Mr. Pipes, is in honor of the elderly character who is the wise director of their trip to England. Siblings, Annie and Drew, are his little tourists who had met the elder on their trip to Germany a year before. The young children are led through several cities as they are followed by a mysterious stranger that Annie notices from time to time. The elder makes desperate attempts to elude their pursuer, but do they work? Does the stranger catch them and harm them? These are interesting questions that will only be answered once the golden pages of this book are opened.
What I liked about this book was the author’s ability to use different languages in the story to make it seem more real. Mr. Bond also created a storyline that revolved around the hymns and Psalms, but it did not take away from the suspense of the manuscript.
Mr. Pipes is an inspirational story that will help young readers learn about the Reformation and yet, still have a remarkable plot that will keep them guessing after every turn of the page.
