Very well written and informative Bible based directives for all men or women who face any type of lust and or sexual type of temptation. Good for helping to counsel others in their struggles as well as ourselves.

False Intimacy was a book I desired to read simply by the title. As one who was caught in bondage to sexual immorality, true intimacy was something I desperately desired but settled for false intimacy in pornography in all its forms, eventually leading to adultery and idolatry. Dr. Schaumburg offers hope and help through the ministry of this book and also the ministry God has called him to in Stone Gate Resources, a program for those caught up in sexual immorality. If you, like me, desire true intimacy with God and others, read this book and be open to God's leading to wholeness.

"False Intimacy" is actually a much better and broader title than the subtitle, for Schaumburg's work is not only about sexual addiction. It is about what the Puritans called "overmuch love"--loving anything more than we love God. It is about what the Reformers called "idols of the heart"--placing anything in first place above God. Schaumburg biblically develops a theology of relational sin based upon the premise that God, the ultimate Relational Being (the eternally Trinitarian Community of Oneness), created us in His image (the imago Dei) to relationally long for communion with Him and connection with one another. As designed by God, intimacy is true and pure and results in shalom--personal and interpersonal wholeness and harmony. As depraved by sin, false intimacy is selfish and impure and results in shame--personal and interpersonal alienation and separation. Schaumburg moves from this Creation and Fall theology to Redemptive theology--what difference does our newness in Christ make in how we overcome our addictions. His wisdom principles are excellent both for the addicted person and for those who love them and desire to help them. As other reviewers have noted, Schaumburg writes "False Intimacy" from a decidedly Christian perspective with the most relevant application for those who identify themselves as committed to Christ. However, the insights of the book, drawn as they are from the Word of God and from Schaumburg's insights working with literally 1000s of addicted people, have application to everyone. Reviewer: Dr. Robert W. Kellemen is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," "Biblical Psychology," "Martin Luther's Counseling," and the forthcoming "Sacred Companions: The Story of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

I've read many books on this subject, and this is the best! Dr. Schaumburg does not give superficial solutions to the deep problem of sexual sin. Thank God that he both exposes the real depth of this sin and points us to a brokenness that allows us to restore our relationships with God and others.

A "must have" book for anyone who knows someone who is struggling, or is struggling themselves with sexual addiction. The author details the roots of addiction, the necessity for professional counseling, and shares insight into the devastation sexual addiction and disconnected relationships can bring. I recommend this highly for counselors and pastors within the church who are unaware that this problem is rampant and pervasive within the church. It will give "alongsiders" insight into how to stretch past denial, and onto healing and reconciliation.
