When it comes to divorce and remarriage, everyone appeals to Scripture---but no one agrees on what it says. In this book, four Christian thinkers (J. Carl Laney, William Heth, Thomas Edgar, and Larry Richards) debate the more perplexing points. Each essayist presents his own view and critiques the others. Case studies apply theories to real-life situations. 252 pages, paper from InterVarsity.

As stated by the other review this book is not for everyone. It is for the person who wishes to wrestle their way through the difficulties this topic presents in order to make an informed opinion on this subject that they can feel comfortable defending from the Word of God. This was a text for an independent study that I did in seminary. I have loaned out the book to people who have questions on this cultural/biblical issue.

This book isn't for everyone -- persons wanting a straightforward, Biblically-based position on divorce and remarriage should look elsewhere. For most believers, this volume will bring more confusion than clarity. For persons who are familiar with these various views however, there is some helpful information present.
The four views stated are: no divorce no remarriage, divorce but no remarriage, divorce and remarriage for adultery or desertion, and divorce and remarriage under a variety of circumstances. The first three positions are offered with so many footnotes and scholarly jargon that the reader gets lost in the shuffle. Only Richards, who presents the fourth view, is easy to understand and to follow in his reasoning.
I can only recommend this book to Christian leaders who want to read a large sampling of materials on this topic. It certainly is not a concise summary of the various viewpoints on divorce and remarriage. For a single, straightforward presentation on this subject, try "Remarriage: A Healing Gift of God" by Larry Richards.
