Clinton and Ohlschlager have edited the definitive volume on modern Christian counseling. Assembling a veritable who's who of Christian counseling leaders (theorists and practitioners), they overview the theological, relational, and practical foundations for Christian care. The foundation laid, they then outline thirteen "modalities" (specialties) of care. Finally, they project into the future pondering those factors that will strengthen Christian counseling. Those approaching Christian counseling from an anti-research perspective and an anti-eclectic approach may be disappointed. Those wanting to understand the intersection of Christian counseling, psychological research, and spirituality will be pleased. Professional Christian counselors and students-in-training will likely be most drawn to this text. Indeed, it could become the standard resource for the next decade. Their subtitle speaks well of their intent: "Foundation and Practice of Compassionate Soul Care." Whether agreeing with each edited chapter, an honest assessment would suggest that the authors desire to assist the Christian counseling movement to ground itself in a theologically sound foundation, coupled with relationally sensitive practice, leading to soul care and spiritual direction that helps others to love God and love one another. Reviewer: Dr. Bob Kellemen, author of "Soul Physicians: A Theology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction" and "Spiritual Friends: A Methodology of Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."
