Publisher's Description

Churchless people are all around us: among our closest loved ones, at our workplaces, in our neighborhoods. And more and more, they are becoming the norm: The number of churchless adults in the US has grown by nearly one-third in the past decade. Yet the startling truth is that many of these people claim they are looking for a genuine, powerful encounter with God—but they just don’t find it in church. What are they (or we) missing? How can we better reach out to them? What can we say or do that would inspire them to want to join a community of faith? Containing groundbreaking new research from the Barna Group, and edited by bestselling authors George Barna (Revolution) and David Kinnaman (You Lost Me), Churchless reveals the results of a five-year study based on interviews with thousands of churchless men and women. Looking past the surface of church attendance to deeper spiritual realities, Churchless will help us understand those who choose not to be part of a church, build trust-based relationships with them, and be empowered to successfully invite them to engage.

Excellent information on today's unchurched. A little lite on connecting with them. Gives more info on what not to do than on what ways work and how to connect with the unchurched. There were no bullet lists on the how tos which would be helpful to many churches.

HOWEVER, overall I think this is an excellent resource on many levels. I highly recommend this book and have encouraged the leaders in our church outreach training ministry to read it, study it and use the information when training people to reach out.

Statistics are fascinating to me, so I was excited to have the opportunity to read Barna Groups book Churchless. Barna and Kinnaman do a good job in explaining the various groups of people they surveyed and the results. The book is laid out in such a way that you can review the charts and then read the dialog that explains it in more detail. Churchless presents to readers an analysis of its research, providing information relevant to better connect with those not involved in the American church. The data presented provides the reader with an opportunity to learn about those who are "unchurched" and "de-churched" (and what the difference is). The book offers questions to review the findings and reflect; allowing the reader to think and reflect about the information they read.

I would recommend this book to those who are interested in a snapshot on Americas population and how the population looks at the church. Depending on the readers background the results will either surprise you or confirm for you what is happening within the American church. If you work in ministry it provides insight that could prove helpful in reaching your community. The tools that have worked in the past are not working now, the book helps explain why and insights on what may be more effective. The reader is also shown how those who are in church and not in church answer the same questions regarding lifestyle. As someone who grew up in the church culture, it was helpful to me to get a glimpse into how people think through the data. It is eye opening to see how things have changed and how people answered the questions presented. I finished the book challenged to be intentional in how I connect with people, asking myself the question Am I showing love as Jesus showed love.

Churchless: Understanding Today's Unchurched And How To Connect With Them, written by George Barna and David Kinnaman, published by Tyndale Momentum, is a publication seeking to guide its readers into understanding that reaching the lost is not only a necessity, it is also a possibility.

Barna and Kinnaman want their readers to understand that there is an increasing number of people who do not attend church. Many of them want to have an encounter with God, but they are not finding a fulfillment to this desire in the local church.

In this publication, Churchless, Barna and Kinnaman provide important statistical information gathered from men and women that provide a picture and/or a road map to understanding why people don't feel the need to attend church. It also provides a plan of action to help these people understand why they should be attending church.

This publication is filled with a plethora of useful information, thus it is a recommended purchase.

The number of unchurched in the U.S. has increased by 30% in the last decade. The Barna Group has produced this book to help those in a faith community build bridges between the unchurched and their community.

The spiritual lives of Americans are changing. Secularization is on the rise. One third of America's adults are essentially secular. The drift away from a Christian nation is predicted to continue in the years to come. Churchgoing is slowly but incontrovertibly losing its role as a normative part of American life. (21) A majority of Americans no longer believe Christianity is the default faith of the nation... (167)

I was surprised to find out that about 21% of unchurched adults are born-again. The Barna Group explores the reasons why people left the church and areas where they might reconsider a commitment to a faith community. There are those who recognize the value of being in a church community but struggle with the sense that God is missing from church and that Christians are missing the point. (175)

This is a good book for church leaders to read, including staff, ministry leaders and board members. The culture is changing and this book helps ministry leaders identify wrong assumptions and know where to move forward.

Consider this: One thing we hear from churchless and unchurched people alike is that they intensely desire the local church to provide what no other group can offer: an experience of the presence of God. (107)

This book reminds us that unchurched people are looking for the church to provide something they can find no where else. God. How is your church doing in that area?

Churchless written by Barna Group, is not a book intended for the masses. Honestly, outside of Christian circles, a reader would be mystified by this particular title. Editors George Barna and David Kinnaman have provided an amazing piece of research for churches and for the Christian who have noticed the culture shift in our country. Quite frankly, it is hard to miss! Churchless offers insight into our nation and why church is no longer a priority even for those who claim to know Christ.

I think one of the most striking descriptions in this book is that of the "actively churched." According to Churchless, actively churched can be defined as those who attend church once a month. This truly shocked my socks off! Maybe I am old-fashioned, but to think that the most devoted to the church attend so little is a discouraging thought.

According to Churchless, 1 in 6 "unchurched" Americans is a born-again Christian, totaling 18 million people. If all of them came to church on a Sunday, it would be the equivalent of adding 50 people to each of the 320,000 Protestant churches in the United States! I am guessing most churches haven't seen that many first-time guests in a long time. There are many more golden nuggets of information in this book that make it a must read for churches and Christians. The best of which is a detailed list of what does and does not work in attracting the "churchless" to your church backed up by researched data.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book by its publisher, Tyndale House in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I have not been compensated.
