The Words Aptly Spoken series from Classical Conversations provides companion resources for the Classical Conversations "Challenge" level curriculum; Words Aptly Spoken: British Literature is designed for Challenge II level curriculum (Grades 10 - 12).
Words Aptly Spoken: British Literature features questions and exercises to be assigned after reading twenty British works, including Beowulf, Paradise Lost, Pride and Prejudice, A Tale of Two Cities, Alice in Wonderland, Out of the Silent Planet, The Hobbit, and more. These books will need to be obtained separately, and are not included in-text.
Each chapter features a short author biography along with an "Understanding Literature" section that provides background information on the book's genre and some of the devices it uses. Questions about each work are included: Review Questions help students understand the basic plot, characters, setting, and message of the document, while Thought Questions help students apply themes and ideas raised by the author to more familiar situations. The "Writing Refinement" section provides the opportunity for students to strengthen their analytical and critical writing skills.
