Author Bio

Michelle Griep’s been writing since she first discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. She seeks to glorify God in all that she writes—except for that graffiti phase she went through as a teenager. She resides in the frozen tundra of Minnesota, where she teaches history and writing classes for a local high school co-op. An Anglophile at heart, she runs away to England every chance she gets, under the guise of research. Really, though, she’s eating excessive amounts of scones while rambling around a castle. Michelle is a member of ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers) and MCWG (Minnesota Christian Writers Guild). Editorial Reviews

Terrific fight scenes and tender reunions round out the galloping plot. The inspirational element is light, potentially enlarging the audience for this historical romance.

Michelle Griep pens an exquisite Regency novel that’s set in London 1807, incorporating shades of suspense, mystery, and romance in such an atmospheric story that it gives you the impression that you've just fallen into another era. And much like the misty rain blanketing London, a cloak of intrigue envelops this story, wholly enticing the reader to lose themselves within.

A master at words, author Michelle Griep adeptly molds her prose to bring life to every sentence in an invigorating story that serves up scads of suspense, peril, romance, and faith. I adored the richly-crafted characters such as the extremely perceptive hero Nicholas, and the self-indulgent Emily that has a penchant for hats, and found that these two inspired the most delightful dialogue. Woven throughout and tying this novel together, were the heartening messages on building trust and developing more positive attitudes in spite of circumstances.

I absolutely loved this book! It started out a bit light-hearted and bordering on comical. But the story also had quite a bit of depth to it. There is a strong Christian theme about having faith that God is in control. The characters have a lot to learn in this novel, and it was enjoyable watching them receive their lessons.

Brentwood’s Ward is a very unique story. Giving us a glimpse into the lives of the very first police officers. I had no knowledge of how the police came to be until I read this book. Michelle Griep has captured 1800s London in a way that I have not read before. I could not put this book down! I was on the edge of my seat (quite literally) for a good portion of the time. The depth of emotion is tangible in our leading characters. I believe that almost anyone can relate to the people in this story.

    A captivating story, if a little far-fetched.

Ive read everything Michelle wrote reader since I discovered her first novel Gallimore a few years ago. Her books are not my favourites, admittedly, but tend to be moderately good. Brentwoods Ward was on the way to becoming her best work in my opinion, with action, mystery, intrigue and a brilliantly dashing hero, a supporting cast of great characters and an original storyline, Seriously are there any other Christian novels about the Bow Street Runners, the fore-runners of todays police force? Such a book could have all the makings of a 19th century detective thriller, echoing some of the literary greats.

In other words, I was rolling along and really liking the story- until the attempted rape scene. Im seriously beginning to think such content is becoming far too common in Christian Fiction novels- and is often unnecessary, especially if its included just to rank up the tension, or to ram home some message about how horribly women were treated in the olden days, or how all the upper classes were dissolute rakesetc, etc.

Now Im not denying that things like that did happen, but for the lead character to be almost raped twice, in one year- once in the garden of her home just seem incredible. I dont deny that the rich and powerful may have taken advantage of the lower classes in any age, but Emily Payne was meant to be a rich socialite, are we honestly supposed to believe that men of the upper classed could just go around raping wealthy young women at balls- absolutely nothing to be done about it? Seriously, Im getting the decided impression that the past is universally being presented as some filthy, lawless quagmire- especially the non-American past- and rape as a far too common device to emphasize its supposed nastiness.

Also, the way the scene was written, although not necessarily very graphic was a little but too much. Afterwards, there was some degeneration into romantic clich- I mean for a woman who had just been almost violently raped to be snogging in her carriage less than an hour later just does not seem like normal behavior. Those and the almost compulsory description of the stray lock of hair begging to be brushed aside- the 'rippling of muscles' underneath the heroes clothes---sigh... Honestly, how many times do you actually see than in real life...

The ending was satisfactory, and had its fair share of tension, and I will say that, all in all, this was a good story, with sounds messages woven in and not written in such a way as to seem preachy or contrived.

However, the above mentioned content issue, and a few Americanisms (which I might have overlooked generally, but some were jarring) result in the lower rating. I'm not trying to attack the author personally, the above could be seen as observations of the Christian Romance genre more generally....but it did sour the taste of what could otherwise have been an excellent book.

I received an electronic version of this novel free from Netgalley for review. I was not required to write a positive one and all opinions expressed are my own.....

Wow. Written like a movie. Brentwood's Ward is full of intrigue, suspense, and romance that any BBC drama fan will love.

Michele's use of language and detail was amazing. From the first page, I could picture everything from the wrinkled pug to the slimy alleyways...and I couldn't stop turning the pages. Mr. Nicholas Brentwood is the perfect hero unknowingly handsome and strong, yet vulnerable.

Emily was a great female lead. A little self-centered and immature at the beginning, but her growth and change throughout the book is realistic, gaining both sympathy and understanding with the reader.

The dialogue and humor was wonderful! You could feel Nicholas' frustration with Emily's sneaky manipulation, though a romantic undercurrent rides beneath it all, and I laughed right out loud during the 'orange' scene.

Admittedly, I was a little uncomfortable with the detail given in the garden scene, but it halted just short of inappropriate.

Any English historical fiction fan will love Michele's book! I found it delightful! I hope she writes another!

*I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. No other compensation was given, and all thoughts are 100% mine.*

Miss Griep is a very talented author. Like no one else, she knows how to create real and believable characters. This is a Regency novel, but so much better than most of the other titles out there okay, I admit that Im not very fond of this genre, but Michelle Griep and her amazingly artful skills knew how to make this a book to remember. Suspense, intrigue, romance this story has it all. If you havent had the pleasure to read any of Miss Grieps work, dont wait any longeryoull love the read!
