Great risks can bring great rewards. But what about the greatest risk? What does it look like when a man gives every aspect of his life to Christ? That’s the topic of Kenny Luck’s latest book, Risk. This book encourages men to trade safety and comfort for something fulfilling and exciting: a life as God’s man.

Luck writes about all the aspects of being consumed by God, from the nervousness that precedes taking the first leap into risky Christian living, to the importance of being accountable to other men. He begins each chapter with an anecdote about a courageous man who demonstrates by his actions one of Luck’s points, then he transitions smoothly into explanations of the spiritual applications of those points. He relates concrete experience to biblical teaching in a way that makes this book practical, exciting, and easy to read. But more importantly, Luck writes from experience. Most, if not all, of the issues discussed in the book are issues he has struggled with. His qualifications for writing this book go far beyond experience, however.

Luck has written and co-written seventeen books, including Every Man, God’s Man, and he is a featured columnist for New Man magazine. He currently serves as the men’s pastor at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, as well as the president and founder of Every Man Ministries, an organization that seeks to strengthen men and train them in true biblical manhood. All of these qualifications make Kenny Luck the perfect man to write this book, and his skill and experience show through page after focused page as he writes a message that men urgently need to hear.

“Risk is in the DNA of every man, put there by God and for God. You may have misplaced it, neglected it, misused it, but it is time to get it back.” This quote from Risk encapsulates the focus of the book. Every chapter, every paragraph, and every line is devoted to opening the minds of Christian men to the exciting, risky life God made them to live. Several main themes run through this book. One of them is that men should be willing to leave what is comfortable to fulfill their calling from God, regardless of the cost. Another is that Christian men should get rid of anything that distracts them from Christ and his purposes. Still another encourages men to “reproduce” spiritually by sharing their faith. These themes and many others come together to support Luck’s major point—men have God-given missions that they cannot complete unless they entrust their lives to God and turn away from the temptation to stay safe.

Risk is wonderful. It’s written for men by a man who understands men’s weaknesses and points out strategies for dealing with them. Not only is it relevant, it’s also well written. His anecdotes make perfect introductions to the topics he discusses, and his writing style is engaging and exciting. Luck delivers a welcome wake-up call to the community of male believers, spurring them on to be Christ-like servants and leaders both in their homes and in the Church. This book is ideal for any man who wants to understand his God-given role and responsibility, but I would especially recommend it for leaders of men’s ministries and for pastors. Jesus said, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it” (Mark 8:35 ESV). Kenny Luck explains articulately and comprehensively how to do that, so Risk should be on every man’s reading list. – Peter Semple, Christian Book Previews.com

When I first saw this book the subtitle scared me. "Are you willing to trust God with everything?" I was not sure that I was ready to make such a statement. However, the Spirit led me to dive into this book and in turn to share it with several others. My church's men's group even made it into a workshop to challange other men to step up and start to live as God intended us to live. I highly recommend the book and workbook to any who are on the fence as to where they should go next in their walk with Christ.
