Noah Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language was produced during the years when the American home, church and school were established upon a Biblical and patriotic basis. Webster made important contributions to an American educational system which kept the nation on a Christian Constitutional course for many years.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the 1828 American Dictionary should contain the greatest number of Biblical definitions given in any reference volume. Webster considered "education useless without the Bible" and while he cautioned against too extensive use of the Bible in schools as "tending to irreverance," he reiterated, "In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government, ought to be instructed... No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people..."

It is a book that brings to life a loving, serving, nurturing family as a model for a needy world.

Each chapter is a delightful revelation of the mothering art.

The author has given us a chronicle of family spirit-building, of mothering and rearing children, that is a beacon on the present, bleak horizon where the family as an institution is under seige. The story imparts not only timeless principles, but images to inspire real beauty and truth in family relations, in Christ-like gentleness, authority, and power. It gives us this and all the elements of a beloved, read-aloud story, full of joy and pathos, and the pulses of family life.

IN this evocative biography of the creator of such classics as Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Kennilworth, and The Lady of the Lake, the great 19th century author lives again in all his vigor, skill, and indomitable courage. The magnetic Scotsman, whose great novels of swashbuckling historical adventure made him the most popular author of his day, was born a puny child, lame from infancy. For his entire life, he worked continuously to write successful books. An old Scottish ballad sings, "a stout heart for a steep climb." Sir Walter Scott had both.
