Oxford University's colleges have always been a place of intellectual inquiry and creative discourse. C.S. "Jack" Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia was part of this larger literary conversation. Lewis participated in a series of literary discussions with friends and colleagues, who called themselves The Inklings. Some members of The Inklings included Charles Williams, J.R.R. Tolkien, Warren Lewis (Jack's older brother), Owen Barfield and Christopher Tolkien (J.R.R. Tolkien's son). Dorothy Sayers was a contemporary of the Inklings and shared their passion for narrative fiction.

Two major influences on Lewis' style and content were G.K. Chesterton and George MacDonald.  Reading Chesterton's The Everlasting Man played a large part in his conversion to Christianity in 1931. George MacDonald did much to influence Lewis' writing of fantasy and allegory. He said that after reading MacDonald, "I knew I had crossed a great frontier." Lewis combined these elements of fantasy and allegory and made a literature of his own. His work continues to remain classic year after year.

The key to William's mystically oriented theological thought, Descent into Hell (arguably Williams's greatest novel) is a multidimensional story about human beings who shut themselves up in their own narcissistic projections, so that they are no longer able to love, to "co-inhere". The result is a veritable hell.

Beginning with an insightful study on the nature of man, Chesterton argues that the central character in history is Jesus Christ, the everlasting Man. No other explanation of the world fits the evidence. Exploding the stale formula of Christ as the pale product of human imagination, he triumphantly asserts the glory and unassailable logic of Christ as the God who, in the fullness of time, steps into his own creation. Displaying all of his brilliant synthesis and devastating irony, The Everlasting Man is perhaps Chesterton's best book. C.S. Lewis who cited The Everlasting Man as one of the principle books in his conversion said, "I read Chesterton's Everlasting Man and for the first time saw the whole Christian outline of history set out in a form that seemed to me to make sense."
