Interview, Excerpt, Product Closeup

Jilted by a fortune hunter, cowgirl Cassidy McClare is a spunky Texas oil heiress without a fortune who would just as soon hogtie a man as look at him. Hoping a summer visit with her wealthy cousins in San Francisco will help her forget her heartache, Cassidy travels west. But no sooner is she settled in beautiful California than Jamie McKenna, a handsome pauper looking to marry well, captures her heart. When Jamie discovers the woman he loves is poorer than he is, Cassidy finds herself bucked by love a second time. Will Jamie discover that money can't buy love after all? And can Cassidy ever learn to fully trust her heart to a man?

Love at Any Cost Discussion Questions: By Julie Lessman

1. Cassie and Aunt Cait are both struggling with their feelings for “the wrong man.” Somehow their emotions and desires are in direct conflict with the rational decisions and choices they have each thought through very carefully. Have you ever been in a situation where your heart wanted one thing and your head told you something else? What was that like? What choice did you ultimately make?

2. The McClares challenge some conventional beliefs about family. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and good friends all speak of one another as family and seem as close to one another as mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers. Sometimes the family you are related to is called your family of origin and the people you have chosen to be “as close as family” are called your family of choice. What does family mean to you? Who do you consider to be part of your family? How did you develop the relationships you have with the people in your family of choice or your family of origin?

3. Jamie struggles with trusting God to take care of his family, in part because he believes he has provided for his mother and sister all by himself. He believes his will to be stronger than God’s will. Have you ever relied on your own strength and wisdom rather than turning to God in prayer? How did that work out for you? What did you learn?

4. Cassie has her heart broken more than once because of the drastic change in her family’s economic circumstances. What consequences can money (or the lack of it) have on a relationship? Have you experienced a similar breach in a relationship due to concerns over money? What was that like for you? How did you resolve it?

5. On page 45, Jamie says that being raised in the Barbary Coast has left “a permanent stain on [his] soul.” Is there a circumstance in your life or a choice that you have made that has left a permanent stain—something that you feel will forever define who you are? What is it and how do you cope with it?

6. Cassie is different from many women her age and in her social class. She prefers jeans to gowns and would rather rope a steer or beat a man at a game of pool than participate in many of the pursuits expected of women in her day. These very things that make her an outcast also make her special and appealing, particularly to Jamie. Have you ever experienced being the outcast, the new girl, the odd man out, etc.? What did that feel like? How did you handle it?

7. Toward the end of the story Jamie’s stomach trouble seems to grow worse as he guzzles down Milk of Magnesia. Do you think his physical distress has anything to do with the emotional and spiritual crisis he is in? How are physical pain and emotional or spiritual pain connected? Have you experienced this yourself? Share that story with the group.

8. One of the ways Cassie and Jamie and their family know that the two are right for each other is that both finally seem to have met their match. Jamie can charm the socks off of any woman, but Cassie resists him. Cassie has firmly made up her mind that she will never fall for another “Pretty Boy,” but Jamie gradually gets to her. Do you think the ability to challenge each other is an ingredient for a happy marriage? Why or why not?

9. Jamie, Cait, Alli, and Cassie all passionately want to clean up the Barbary Coast and care for the vulnerable women and children who live there. They care deeply about these people but also see this neighborhood as an unconscionable blight on a city they love. Is there something you would like to change or clean up in your community? Are you passionate about a cause or a group of people right in your city or neighborhood? Share that passion with the group.

10. What do you think happens to Logan and Cait? Will she ever be able to trust him? Will he tell her that Jamie is his son? If you were writing their story, what would happen next?
