|Do you plan to continue to have both a writing career and a police enforcement career?
Iím going to continue with both for now. I sense God leading me in the direction of writing and speaking full time, but I donít want to be premature on that. Iíve had a really good law enforcement career, and I still enjoy the work. When I feel that God wants me to write and speak full time, and itís not just what I want to do, then Iíll take that plunge.
How much research did Rolling Thunder take?
Very little. I wrote most of Rolling Thunder from experience.
How did you come up with thunder as an issue?
While listening to a Focus on The Family broadcast several years ago, Dr. Dobson spoke about a forty year old man who had a paralyzing fear of thunder because of the abuse he suffered from his father. I wondered what that man must be like. How did he live? Did he ever reconcile? I inserted a lot of the other elements as I went along. But thatís where the idea came from.
Do you know somebody that resembles the father?
No one person in particular. Heís more of a composite of people Iíve known through the years. I weaved the different traits into his personality.
Who is your favorite character?
Tim is my fun character. Heís a former marine and a bit of a joker. He was a blast to write because I considered him my alter-ego. Heís going to play a much larger role in the second book.
How personal is Rolling Thunder?
I donít know how you can write a novel thatís not personal. The exact situations might not have happened to me, but I certainly use the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of my experiences in the story.
At times when I was writing this, I laughed out loud. There were times when I cried. I think to truly touch readers you have to be genuine with your feelings and pour them onto the pages.
What other projects do you have on the horizon?
Iíve got eight or nine stories outlined. I want to write some humor and maybe a first person novel down the road. Iím going to see where this goes and pray a lot about it. Iíve done speaking engagements, too, and really enjoyed that. Iím waiting to see what this year brings and search out Godís direction.
What is the title of the second book in the Truth Chasers Series?
"From the Belly of the Dragon."
How did you come up with the name ďTruth Chaser?Ē
My purpose in writing novels is to reveal Godís truth through fiction, so the Truth Chasers series kind of dovetailed into the vision I had for the series.
Who is the person who most influenced your writing?
Other than Jesus, who I believe placed the writing bug in my heart, I would have to say my wife, Lori. Iíve married the greatest lady in the world. Sheís supported me in everything Iíve ever wanted to do, no matter how nutty the idea. Sheís my best friend and the love of my life. Iím a blessed man.
