The Anabaptists of North America sport an amazing spectrum of religious and cultural diversity - from communal Hutterites to urban Mennonites, from low-tech Amish to acculturated Brethren. New members with Asian, African, and Hispanic cultural roots add spice and color to traditional Anabaptist ways. Counting more than 6,000 congregations and 100 different groups, the Anabaptists are known for their strong commitments to peacemaking, service, and community. More than fifty years ago, in 1941, as World War II was gathering momentum as the consolidated public school movement was changing the educational complexion of the country, Mennonites of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, decided to open their own high school. Lancaster Mennonite High School has reflected the church's general move from farming to professionalism, from a highly concentrated authority to shared leadership, from church services as the focus of social life to a broad range of music and arts and sports events. A light social history, highlighted with numerous anecdotes and memories of many who studied and taught there. 315 pages, paperback.

The author's gigantic work, the record of Christian faith and endurance from the first century to the Anabaptist persecutions in the sixteenth century. Here are stories of men and women who died for their belief. Written in 1659 by a Dutch Mennonite to strengthen the faith of his fellow believers and translated into German in 1748 through 1749 at the time of the French and Indian War for the same reason. In 1886 it was translated into English. A challenge to many generations. "This work comprises two books, each of them containing a different and independent topic. The first is a treatise of the Holy Baptism and of that which pertains to it. The second is a historical acccount of the holy martyrs who suffered on account of baptism or generally for the testimony of Jesus Christ."

In this colorful, updated documentary, Mennonite historian John Ruth takes us sympathetically into the Amish mindset. Dr. John A. Hostetler, author of Amish Society, comments on the survival of an alternative to the kind of world we have made. As the Amish increase in numbers, some of them migrate from homesteads in Pennsylvania toward more open farmland. Those staying where the land is too crowded to farm have developed an amazing variety of cottage industries. But all such changes are made very carefully, in order not to sacrifice spiritual covenant and community for the sake of convenience. Approx. 54 minutes.
