After witnessing the death and destruction caused by the Civil War, Colonel Blake Wallace is eager to leave his once precious Southern homeland for the pristine shores of Brazil and the prospect of a new utopian community. Widow Eliza Crawford seeks passage on Wallace's ship harboring a dirty secret-and a blossoming hope for a fresh start. But will dangers from the sea and from man keep them from the peace and love they long for?

Forsaken Dreams Discussion Questions: by MaryLu Tyndall

1. Not only did the Southern States suffer a humiliating and devastating defeat in the Civil War, but in the following years, they were severely harassed, falsely imprisoned, murdered, stolen from, and restricted to the point of the complete loss of their freedom. Hopefully, most of us haven’t been treated that badly in our lifetimes, but have you ever been mistreated to a point that you wanted to run away?  Not only run away but go to a better place and never come back? Explain your feelings at that time in your life.  Were you so desperate to leave that nothing could have stopped you?

2. The heroine, Eliza, is a vivacious, adventurous, caring woman. Sheis the kind of woman who takes risks, who wants to live life to the fullest, but because of her type of personality, she has one major flaw. What is that flaw? Is it something you can relate to? Do you know someone like her?

3. Have you ever rushed into a decision that you ended up regretting later? Describe the situation and the outcome and what you learned from it.

4. What was Eliza’s final test? The test she had to pass in order to prove she’d learned her lesson. What do you think would have eventually happened if she hadn’t passed the test?

5. What are some reasons people might give for not following God’s directions? What are they afraid of if they do obey? Do you believe God’s commands and laws restrict the lives of His followers? What argument would you give someone to prove that following God is always the best choice and gives the most freedom?

6. Imagine, for a moment, that your entire family was murdered by a certain group of people. Imagine how angry and bitter you would be. How would you ever get over something like that? How would you go on? And more importantly, how would you forgive? What experience at the end of the book did Grant have that finally opened his heart to forgive? Do you think this type of forgiveness is even humanly possible?

7. Grant had a permanent limp from a war injury. Though he believed his hobbled gait caused others to think less of him, do you agree? Did it impact his ability to lead? What is the true measure of a hero? A leader? And where do those qualities come from? Do you know someone who has what the world would call a defect, but who, after knowing them for a while, you hardly notice anymore?

8. Several tragedies as well as various odd events happened along the journey to Brazil.   Can you name them? Some could be explained away as natural phenomena, while others appeared almost supernatural in nature. What were those strange events and what do you think caused them? Was someone or something trying to keep them from making it to Brazil? Theories?

9. The doctor gave some wise advice about why God allows bad things to happen. What was it? Do you feel his answer was sufficient? Will it help you when someone asks you the same question?

10. What caused most of the passengers to change their mind about Eliza? Do you believe that love is powerful enough to turn hate into affection? Why does God instruct us to love our enemies?

11. It would seem that many of the other characters in the colony harbor secrets of their own. Which character touched you in a unique way and why? Which characters are you dying to know more about?
