From the Land of Fire and Ice back to England's shores, Alexandria Featherstone finds herself the new Duchess of St. Easton. Her husband has promised a wedding trip to take them to the place where her imperiled parents were last seen, Italy and the marble caves of Carrara, but a powerful Italian duke plots against Alex and her treasure-hunting parents.

Favorite Verse: Isaiah 61:1-3 (I basically love all of Isaiah for its poetic quality:)- "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners...

 Our Interview with Jamie Carie

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Growing up I was a bookworm! My love for books started when my dad decided to ban television from our house. My brother and I weren’t too happy about it at first but that decision spurred creativity, imagination and my love for reading. Reading led to some writing – poetry, song lyrics, short stories, plays and articles. I grew up and started my own family, homeschooling and writing for my church and joining a homeschool co-op. A few years into young motherhood I sat down one cold night and started writing my first novel about a girl struggling through a blizzard. I just wrote and wrote, letting the story take me away. That’s when I discovered that I loved writing novels. Ten years later (I had a long road to publication) Snow Angel was published and I’ve been writing stories ever since.

What is your favorite Bible verse (translation too, please)? Why?

I have many favorites but one that means a lot to me and I feel is a part of my personal mission is Isaiah 61:1-3 (NIV):

“The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.”

Have you spent time in England? Italy?

I wish I could say yes to this but I have to say not yet! My dream is go to the places in the Forgotten Castles series – Ireland, Iceland, England and Italy. One of the best parts of being a novelist is traveling all over the world with my characters.

What was your inspiration to write the Forgotten Castles Series?

I love a tortured genius hero and a sweet but determined heroine who go through a lot of growth and change over the course of the story. This series really started with these characters and grew into a grand adventure spanning several countries. It was a great experience to have the longer story arc. Spending time with these characters over three books instead of one made me really fall in love with them.
How much of the story comes from personal experience?

Well, I can’t give too much away, but I have experienced something similar to what happened to Gabriel, the Duke of St. Easton when he has a physical challenge. And, like Alexandria, I wanted my parents’ time and attention growing up. They were in “the ministry” and we devoted our lives to the church. I often joke that my teenage years were very relatable to the movie Footloose. I am sure that a lot of my angst came from that time.

How much research did A Duke’s Promise take?

A lot! Whenever you have characters traveling as much as I do in this series there is a lot of research to be done. For A Duke’s Promise I had to learn all about the route from Paris to Massa, Italy by balloon. I also try very hard (and pray hard) to grasp the feel of a place. I hope when my characters get to Italy that the readers feel the difference in that culture and setting. It is such a romantic, poetic and peaceful place. I pray I was able to capture that.
omes out in my stories.

What are the most interesting facts that you learned while researching and writing A Duke’s Promise?

This book has such a surprise ending that I can’t say much about one of the most interesting facts – let’s just say it has something to do with an invention and a famous inventor. I also enjoyed learning about hot air balloons and hydrogen balloons. I think this book has a hint of a Steampunk feel (think The Time Machine) which was so fun to discover.

What aspects of being a writer do you enjoy the most?

When the characters start to flesh out and breath. I can’t tell you how it happens but it is truly magical and the best part of making up stories.

What clubs or organizations are you involved with helping with your writing?

I belong to ACFW, RWA, TWG, HisWriters and a local group called IWG (Indianapolis Writers Group) and a few other groups. Most of the interactions are online but I get out occasionally and chat all things books and writing with them face to face.
What new projects are on the horizon?

I am slowly working on my memoirs and starting to dream up ideas for a new series – three sisters who have special gifts. It has a fairy-tale setting with Steampunk influences. I don’t know if anything like it has been done before so that’s fun to contemplate and a little scary!

What message would you like your readers to take from reading the Forgotten Castles series?

It’s the same message in Snow Angel and all of my books. I write stories that reflect the one true Story – God’s story of our creation. I hope readers get a strong sense that God loves them and has a plan for their lives. That He will guide them through the trials and good and bad times. That His plan is good and perfect and designed to prepare them for eternal life and what God created them for. This life is a shadow of the glory to come. Just keep your eyes (and your faith) on Jesus and everything else will fall into place.

What is your greatest achievement?

My three beautiful sons and a marriage going on 24 years. And my steadfast faith in God/Jesus/Holy Spirit (praise God!). I am blessed beyond measure to be called and chosen!

What do you do to get away from it all?

We recently went on a family vacation to the beach and it was wonderful. I love exploring new places with those I love.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I appreciate you and CBD and all you do for Christian fiction!
