No other book in the Bible compares with the wonder of the sacred collection of inspired worship songs known as the Psalms. Considered by many to be the most loved portion of Scripture, the Psalms have been a bedrock of comfort and a tower of strength for believers in every experience of life. This is the first of two volumes in the Holman Old Testament Commentary given to the Psalms, that provides commentary on Psalms chapters 1-75. Some of the key Psalms receive an added in-depth treatment that includes exposition, illustrations, and teaching plans while providing an introductory overview of all 150 Psalms. The latest volume in the Old Testament series will equip teachers and pastors in preparing to teachers and preach the words composed from the shepherd king's heart.

Solomon, tenth son of David and third king of Israel, had a reputation for great wisdom. His name is associated with many of the Proverbs, and he is considered to be the author of Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs. Duane Garrett has characterized Ecclesiastes as the Bible's "resident alien." Many people even wonder why Ecclesiastes is a part of the Bible. Well-known writes have weighed in with praise for Ecclesiastes. Herman Melville said "the truest of all books is Solomon's and Ecclesiastes is the fine hammered steel of woe." Thomas Wolfe believes that "Ecclesiastes is the greatest single piece of writing I have ever known and the wisdom expressed in it the most lasting and profound." Most remarkable may be the comments of R.C. Sproul. He says that Ecclesiastes has a fond place in his heart because it was mightily used in his conversion to Christ--the second half of Ecclesiastes 11:3, Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where it falls, there will it lie. Hearing this verse, Sproul saw himself "lying on the floor of the forest having fallen...and rotting and disintegrating." Song of Songs is a love song that clearly celebrates the joy of physical, intimate love within marriage. One of the book's distinctive messages is that sex is God's gift, his good gift, and that it should be enjoyed. The Song boldly proclaims the value and beauty of love and devotion between a man and women. The Song of Solomon has a message that all married couples need to hear. It also has a helpful word for those anticipating marriage. The beauty of its language and thoughts=elevate the sexual and physical relationship to a much higher level that does the world. Sexual feelings are accepted and affirmed. They are a part of God's plan for His people.

Located on the front of the historic Trinity Church in Boston are sculptures of six men. At the center are four Gospel writers, who are flanked on the right by Paul the Apostle and on the left by Isaiah the prophet. Isaiah's presence in this distinguished company speaks volumes about the importance of this Hebrew prophet to the church. In this Holman Old Testament Commentary, Trent C. Butler has made this Mount Everest of Bible prophecy accessible to those who teach and preach. Dr. Butler brings to bear both linguistic and historical insights to understand Isaiah in his own context and to discern the application of his prophecy in our time. Also coming soon in this series are volumes discussing Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers.Theologically, the Holman Old Testament Commentary Series is conservative evangelical. You do not need to know Greek orHebrew to benefit from this collection. Geared for students, teachers, and pastors this series is organized in a section-by-section format based on the NIV. The Holman Old Testament Commentary has two volumes on the minor prophets that came to be so called because of their size but not their importance. This volume contains commentary on the last six of the minor prophets. Despite the fact that each of the 12 books of the Minor Prophets were written at different times and places, sometime in the development of the Hebrew canon, these twelve books were bound together in one scroll. Over time, they came to be called "The Twelve." Some Old Testament scholars have argued that there is an overall structure to Minor Prophets. Paul House argues that the first six books, Hosea to Micah have sin as their theme. Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah emphasize punishment while Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi focus on restoration.

In this commentary, Steven Miller makes clear the message and enduring relevance of each of these six prophets. In The New American Commentary and in Shepherd's Notes , Dr. Miller has served as a translator of the Holman Christian Standard Bible, and has written extensively for Southern Baptist Bible study curriculum. Steve and his wife Paula have two daughters, Miriam and Rachel.
