Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was a German Reformed church historian, born in Switzerland. He was educated at Tubingen, Halle, and Berlin, and later took a position as Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary, New York. Schaff bases his work on the premise that church history in order to be valid and valuable must deal with three factors: 1) God through Christ, 2) man as a responsible moral creature, and 3) Satan as a real being employing the Anti-Christ as his agent at the end of time.

Schaff begins his history with an examination of the preparation for Christianity in Judaism and the heathen world and the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The 8 volume series concludes with a general introduction to modern church history and a thorough analysis of the productive period of the Reformation, tracing the Protestant movement in Germany and Switzerland to the close of the 16th century. There are footnotes, charts, maps and each volume contains its own alphabetical index.

Schaff taught church history at German Reformed Seminary in Mercersburg, Penn., and Union Theological Seminary in New York. He was involved in the formation of the Evangelical Alliance, the revision of the English Bible (the Revised Version), and the Alliance of the Reformed Churches. Schaff was founder of the American Society of Church History.

Covering the time form 50 AD to 1975 AD, this book is splitinto 8 sections. A large, thoughtful, poised work by amaster of discrimination who is a good writer and a clearthinker. Tackles a complicated subject in which prejudiceshave a tendency to get in the way of scholarship. This doesnot happen since he has Christian, not sectarian, sympathies. Paul Johnson was editor of the English weekly, The New Statesman, and is now Director of New Statesman Publishing Company.

This seminary-level textbook on church history is distinctive from others (such as Williston Walker's A History of the Christian Church) in that it integrates events and developments of the church with the history of doctrine (historical theology) and within the cultural, intellectual, and political milieu of the times. The author helps readers look beyond the names, events, and details to see church history as the story of people involved in the greatest community the world has known, arising from the greatest event in history, the coming of the Son of God. Although the author focuses mainly on the history of Christianity in Western civilization, the more global and ecumenical environment of the twenty-first century requires coverage of Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia as well. The style is readable rather than pedantic, and the illustrations, charts, and sidebars presented in a two-color format make this book both useful and attractive. A companion to this volume brings the story of the church up to the present.

From the great Hans Kung comes a landmark history of the Catholic Church and its place in the world, from its roots in the teachings of Jesus Christ to the present day. To recount the two-thousand-year story of how the church developed from a small band of persecuted Jews who followed Christ into the most enduringly powerful institution in the history of the world is to face controversy at every step. Hans Kung flinches at nothing, from the origins and legitimacy of the Vatican's claims to supremacy--and, much later, infallibility--to the matter of the Holocaust and the fierce debates Kung himself has been involved in as the primary author of Vatican II and one of the Christian world's great reforming voices.
The great individuals--Paul, Augustine, Francis of Assisi, Thomas Aquinas, the magnificent popes, and the disastrous ones--and the watershed events--the conversion of the Roman emperors, the great schism with the east, the crusades and the challenge of Islam, the great heroes and their suppression, the Inquisition, the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, the change of modernity and the waning of the church's influence as an earthly power, the role of women, the treatment of the Jews--are all treated with magisterial wisdom and erudition. Always, Hans Kung distinguishes between what is timeless and universal in the Catholic Church's values and what is the product of human agency.

For the non-specialist, Martin Marty traces the church's quest through twenty centuries for unity, sanctity, uni versality, and authentic witness. He delves into the dispar ity between the ideals of the church and historical reality in order to provide a brilliant, instructive, and fair statement of the history of Christianity from its founding to the present day. Marty's principle of narration revolves around the four historic notes of the Church: one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. In this second edition, revised and expanded, Marty has added an entirely new section entitled "Postscript and Prescript" in which he discusses the recent past and prospects. Fresh insights and revisions based on the most recent contemporary developments keep this volume abreast of the times, making it an up-to-date survey of the history of Christianity. Includes notes, index, and a chronological table of events up until 1950.
