St. Augustine, accepted by most scholars as the most important personality in the ancient church, was born in the 4th Century at Tagaste, Numidia in North Africa. He is arguably considered, the seminal theologian in Christian history. His most influential work, the Confessions, documents Augustine’s journeys through several philosophical systems, his own sin, and eventually his conversion to Christianity. In addition to the Confessions, Augustine also wrote the monumental City of God as well as the Enchiridion, On Christian Teaching, De Trinitate, and innumerable sermons, and expositions on Scripture.

This volume of The Library of Christian Classics contains three works of Augustine published in the years between 410 and 420, when Augustine was in his late fifties or early sixties. Still at the height of his powers, and not yet wholly absorbed by the Pelagian controversy, these show Augustine as a master of theological thought and its expression. They are as beautiful in their expression, as they are in the importance of their thought. Works included:

  1. The Trinity

The definitive reference work on Augustine that scholars, from all fields of theological study, describe as "superb" and "indispensable" for students, scholars, libraries, and anyone interested in studying Augustine. While the work provides exhaustive resources on Augustine's own life and his theological and pastoral work, it also provides an exceptional wealth of information about scholarship, past and present on the great theologian. Moreover, it documents the influence of Augustine on the Catholic Church, the Reformation and on great thinkers and theologians such as Kierkegaard, Luther, Erasmus, and Calvin. Topics range from archeology to martyrdom, from imagination to Augustine's personal friends.

16 centuries ago, the greatest empire the world had ever seen, The Roman Empire, symbolically, with the sack of its capitol, the eternal city of Rome, died. It was the end of 1,000 years of civilization by the hands of barbarian hordes from Germania. Many Romans argued at the time that the Empire was crumbling because the ancient gods had been displaced by the now official-and dominant-Christian faith. The City of God is a rebuttal of this belief-but that is far from all that it is. in addition to being an apologetic work of Christian influence, is also one the most important theological constructions on theological anthropology (esp. human depravity, political instability) and the glory of God, of his kingdom, his "City" his righteousness. Moreover, the book is perhaps the most important and groundbreaking political philosophy the church has yet to produce. Second only to Augustine's Confessions in popularity, and spreading a wider theological net than Augustine's De Trinitate The City of God is the greatest and most comprehensive of Augustine's works. It is impossible to understand his thought, or its trajectory without this work. Now bound in a reader friendly design and size, and printed on straight white, and semi-gloss pages this edition is excellent for both a straight read of the text, or a critical study of it.

When Saint Augustine wrote his Confessions he was facing, and responding to, a growing spread of asceticism in the Roman world. His task was twofold: to explain to himself the significance of his conversion to Christianity, and to do so in terms that would convince his readers that this was indeed the one, true faith. In his attempt to achieve these aims, Saint Augustine produced a masterpiece of intellectual biography. The Confessions are written with an emotional intensity that sets him apart from the academic tradition to which he belonged, and it is this intensity, combined with ferociously self-honest analysis, that has given his work its last appeal. Beautifully written and suffused with philosophical and theological learning, the Confessions are an outstanding account of the search for truth by a sinner who became a great saint.

The treatise De libero arbitrio voluntatis was begun by St. Augustine at Rome in the year 387-88, two years after his conversion to Christianity and one year after his baptism by St. Ambrose at Milan. It remained incomplete however, until 395. By this time, Augustine had returned to Africa, where he was ordained Bishop of Hippo. In 395 he returned to the treatise finishing books two and three and adding them  to the already completed manuscript of book one. When completed it became the first systematic treatment of the problem of the will other than Paul.
