Charles W.S. Williams was born on September 20, 1886 in London, England. In 1908 he was hired at the Oxford University Press (OUP) where he worked for many years until his death in 1945. When World War II began in 1939, OUP was forced to move their offices from London to Oxford. This move to Oxford helped spark Williams and C. S. Lewis' friendship and he became a regular attendee of Inklings meetings. Williams wrote many critical works on history, drama, theology and biography, but he is most remembered for his fiction. T.S. Eliot described his novels as "supernatural thrillers." Set in the present day, his characters wrestle with supernatural powers, exploring how human wills can either be sanctified or corrupted by this power. |

The key to William's mystically oriented theological thought, DESCENT INTO HELL (arguably Williams's greatest novel) is a multidimensional story about human beings who shut themselves up in their own narcissistic projections, so that they are no longer able to love, to "co-inhere".
