Listen in on the conversations of some of the greatest Catholic minds as they discuss and debate "creationism" and "evolutionism". Pope Benedict XVI says, "It all comes down to 'What came first?' Creative Reason, the Creator Spirit who makes all things and gives them growth, or Unreason, which, lacking any meaning, strangely enough brings forth a mathematically ordered cosmos, as well as man and hisreason." The latter, however, would then be nothing more than a chance result of evolution and thus, in the end, equally meaningless." Foreword by Cardinal Christoph Schonborn; hardcover.

Based on Pope Benedict XVI's weekly teaching on the relationship between Christ and the Church, this book tells the drama of Jesus' first disciples--his Apostles and their associates--and how they spread Jesus' message throughout the ancient world. Far from distorting the truth about Jesus of Nazareth, insists Benedict, the early disciples remained faithful to it, even at the cost of their own lives.

At his Wednesday Audiences in 2007 and 2008, Pope Benedict XVI gave a series of short talks on the Church Fathers. He devoted himself not only to such famous and influential Fathers as Augustine and John Chrysostom but also to figures not venerated as saints; the subject of one treatment, Tertullian, even died outside the Catholic communion. This volume contains 36 of these inspirational teachings.

Fr. Twoomey offers here a unique double-presentation of the man, Pope Benedict XVI--a "theological portrait" that encompasses both an overview of the writings, teachings and thought of the brilliant theologian and spiritual writer, as well as the man himself, his personality traits, and how he commmunicates with others. Twoomey shows that the Pope's style is really the opposite of the negative and inaccurate past depictions of Ratzinger. Benedict is indeed very pastoral and will first win the hearts of the people who can then read his writings for themselves. His first encyclical, God is Love, underscores that approach.

Twoomey also reveals that the secret to Benedict's serene dignified manner is his openness to beauty and truth. He lives for others and is not preoccupied with his own self. He is a man that Twoomey says "has the courage to be imperfect", showing he has a deep humility and that he strives for teaching the truth even when he is misunderstood. Here is a book that will help you get to know the new pope as if you had a personal introduction.

Benedict XVI is the Pope's encyclical on social justice. He emphasizes truth and charity as the fundamental principles of justice and calls for integral human development with a focus on the spiritual dimension. He holds that human flourishing comes when there is a generosity and “gratuitousness” among citizens and nations that goes beyond economic and political systems. “Charity” is necessary for “justice” to be “justice”.

Benedict also argues that technology must not be seen as automatically providing solutions to problems, without the need for morality. Nor must man seek to avoid responsibility for overcoming social problems by rejecting technological development as inevitably evil. Benedict insists that man must be humble yet confident that he can, through faith and reason, make true progress in human development.

Focusing specifically on the 13th-century founding of the Franciscans by St. Francis of Assisi and the Dominicans by St. Dominic Guzm n, the pope said personal holiness led the two saints to preach and to help actualize a return to Gospel poverty, a deeper unity with the Church, and a new movement of evangelization, including within the European universities that were blossoming at the time.

This lovely illustrated book for children (of all ages!) picks up where Joseph and Chico left off. The narrator of this book is a blue rock-thrush that spends most of his time on the dome of Saint Peter's Basilica and in the Vatican gardens. This particular bird's name is Max, and from his solitary perch, he observes everything in the vicinity. He is fascinated by one human in particular: the Pope. Max tells readers what the Pope does on a typical day, as well as about special moments in his life, such as his vacations and apostolic trips. The book provides a delicate portrait of the Holy Fathers many responsibilities, and it helps us understand Pope Benedict's many important obligations that he always strives to carry out with love, faith and dedication.

In response to Benedict XVI's first encyclical, the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies and Marriage and Family reflects, together with the Holy Father, on love. From the very beginning, the fundamental work of the Institute has been pursuing a deeper understanding of God's plan for marriage and family. In these twenty-five years various generations of students and professors, following the legacy of John Paul II, have been able to discover and communicate the beauty of the vocation for which all men have been created: the call to love.

Twenty-six professors from the Institute's various sessions express what in their understanding are the main themes of the document, approaching the topics raised by the Holy Father with different theological and philosophical perspectives; by so doing they have highlighted the significance and fecundity of the lines of thought suggested by the Pope. This book is offered as a path towards a fuller understanding of the profundity and richness of the love with which God fills us and wants us to communicate in our turn.
