Everyone needs love. Everyone desires love. But not everyone understands love. In fact, love is probably the most misunderstood subject in history. In his first Encyclical, Pope Benedict helps to clarify the meaning of love. He examines the nature of various kinds of love-human love and divine love, eros, friendship, and charity. He writes beautifully and inspirationally of how man was made for love by the God who is love, the God who became one of us out of love-Jesus Christ.

In the second part of the Encyclical, Benedict addresses the Church's practice of love. He examines the relationship between justice and charity, as well as the call of every Catholic to serve others in love. The Pope's "love letter" to mankind is remarkably accessible and timely.

This selection of 100 distinct Marian thoughts by Pope Benedict XVI is drawn from a variety of sources, including homilies, addresses, and the encyclical Deus Caritas Est (God Is Love). The Holy Father's reflections cover the significant moments in the life of Our Lady: the Annunciation, the Visitation, her Magnificat, the birth of Jesus, the death of Jesus on the Cross, Pentecost, and the Assumption. The Pope reflects also on Mary as a disciple of Jesus and on Marian devotion. This beautifully expressive volume concludes with several prayers to the Blessed Mother of Jesus and our Mother.

Pope Benedict’s Church Fathers follows the important figures of early Christianity in all their evangelical vitality, spiritual profundity, and uncompromising love of God. Benedict tells the true story of Christianity’s against-all-odds triumph in the face of fierce Roman hostility and persecution. He does this by exploring the lives and the ideas of the early Christian writers, pastors, and martyrs, men so important to the spread of Christianity that history remembers them as “the Fathers of the Church”.

This rich and engrossing survey of the early Church includes those churchmen who immediately succeeded the Apostles, the “Apostolic Fathers”: Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus of Lyon. Benedict also discusses such great Christian figures as Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian of Carthage, the Cappadocian Fathers, as well as the giants John Chrysostom, Jerome, and Augustine. This book is a wonderful way to get to know the Church Fathers and the tremendous spiritually rich patrimony they have bequeathed to us.

Can someone's conscience be wrong? Some people think conscience is infallible. But even most of them would have to admit that people should not be free to do whatever they want--murder, steal, lie, etc.--provided their consciences approve. Conscience, then, cannot be infallible. Not unless there is no such thing as moral truth, writes Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI. In other words, no unless there is no such thing as right and wrong, and not unless we cannot condemn as truly evil the genocide of the Holocaust, for example, or other instances of mass murder.

On the other hand, if conscience and be mistaken, then there must be some kind of moral truth, some things that are really right and others that are really wrong. WE must have some way to know the difference--some way to correct our consciences so that we judge rightly what is good and what is evil. So how do we know the truth that our consciences should follow? How do we correct a mistaken conscience? In two insightful essays, written before he was pope, Benedict XVI thoughtfully considers these and other crucial questions, including the role of Church leaders in helping people form their consciences.

David Gibson, a Vatican journalist, presents a behind-the-scenes look at the early years of Pope Benedict XVI and what his papacy means for the future. While well written, Gibson seems troubled that Benedict XVI is not more "progressive" and seems at times to lament the fact that the Church under the new pontiff will not be one of compromise. This viewpoint will be welcomed by those who think that the Church needs to adapt to modern Culture but will trouble those with a more traditional bent in their view of the Ancient Church.
