A thousand years ago when the Vikings roamed the seas, led by their Norse gods, there lived a man in Norway called Erik the Red. He was able and strong but his temper was wild, and after a fight he was banned from Norway. So he sailed to Iceland. There he built a farm, found a wife, and lived in peace for a while. But then he began to quarrel and fight again, and it wasn't long before he had to flee from Iceland, too. Now Erik sailed off into the unknown sea toward the setting sun, and there behind a wall of ice he found a new land... Erik the Red had three sons. The one was called Torstein, the second Torvald, and the third was called Leif. And this is the story of Leif, Erik's son, who sailed with his father to Greenland, and who later sailed still farther west and found there the continent of America. Originally published in 1941, this oversized book is beautifully illustrated. Recommended for ages 4 to 11.

At the turn of the first millennium, the Vikings swept through Anglo-Saxon England, fierce, unexpected and unstoppable. Plundering not only monasteries and cathedrals, but the very underpinnings of a fragile culture, they ran unchecked by military might and a church in decline - until three centuries later, when King Alfred arose to unite the Anglo-Saxon empire. Under his reign, the marauders were quelled, a new age of learning came to England and through the influence of one of their own chieftains, King Canute, many Vikings were converted to Christianity and to English laws and ways. Here is a fascinating look at England's mysterious Viking era - a colorful and evocative time of Dark-Ages fear, fighting faith, and cloak-and-dagger subterfuge; an age when warriors were sanctified, kings were martyred and barbarian overlords were humbled before the cross of Christ. Rich in imagery, this book will stir the imagination and inform both the head and the heart.

'The Vikings Age,' writes Else Roesdahl, 'is shot through with the spirit of adventure. For 300 years, from just before AD 800 until well into the eleventh century...the Vikings affected almost every region accessible to their ships, and left traces that are still part of life today...' Far from being just 'wild, barbaric, axe-wielding pirates', the Vikings created complex social institutions, oversaw the coming of Christianity to Scandinavia and made a major impact on European history through trade, travel and farflung colonization. This encyclopaedic study brings together wide-ranging research on Viking art, burial customs, class divisions, jewellery, kingship, poetry and family life and, in this revised editon, has been updated to include recent discoveries. The result is a rich and compelling picture of an extraodinary civilization.

Viking marauders in their longships burst through the defences of 9th-century Europe, striking terror into the hearts of monks, peasants and rulers alike for two centuries. But the Vikings were more than just marine terrorists, and this atlas shows their development as traders and craftsmen, explorers, settlers and mercenaries. It follows the tracks of the Viking merchants who travelled deep into Russia, of Viking mercenaries who served in the emperor's bodyguard at Constantinople, and Viking mariners who sailed beyond the edge of the known world to North America.

They tell of famous kings, difficult gods and women of great beauty, goodness or cunning; but although they paint the traditional colourful picture of the Viking warrior making raids in his dragon-headed longboat, these stories are not concerned, like Hrafnkel's Saga, for example, to point a moral or to set down the glories of Icelandic history or geography. Instead the narrators, witty and well-read, plundered sources from Homer to French romance, and incorporated local myths, legends and heroic tales in a bid to entertain us, capture our imagination and make us laugh.
