Is the modern state of Israel the fulfillment of ancient prophecy? Are Jewish people saved by virtue of being God's chosen people? These important questions affect our theology, evangelism, missions-even our politics. Palmer Robertson carefully and clearly takes us to the Bible to answer these and other questions. His masterful exegesis of Hebrews 7 and Romans 11 alone are worth the price of this book.

Pastors serve their parishioners' spiritual needs and often address community and social issues, including politics. While much is known about how the public views politics, what about pastoral opinion? Based on two recent surveys of The Lutheran Church---Missouri Synod (LCMS) pastors, the authors examine how these men view politics and government today and the relationship between church and state.

Lutheran Pastors and Politics uses extant literature to explain a theory of LCMS clergy involvement in the political realm, test the theory against data gathered through two surveys, and comment on findings in light of an American society that is morally challenged and has little faith and trust in the governmental system. The authors will seek to discover the attitudes toward politics held by LCMS clergy and what implications these attitudes have for pastors' earthly ministries, especially in light of the ways they may overtly or subtly influence parishioners' political views.

Princeton theologian Mark Taylor analyzes right-wing Christian movements in the United States amid the powers of religion, politics, empire, and corporate classes in post-9/11 America.

The real gift of Taylor's book is his argument that this militant Christian faith must be viewed against a backdrop of the American political romanticism and corporatist liberalism of U.S. past and present. Taylor uses the best of cultural and historical studies, while deftly drawing lessons for American readers from theologian Paul Tillich's analysis of power and religion during the rise of fascism and nationalism in Germany of the 1930s.

The result is an innovative framework for interpreting how Christian nationalists, Pentagon war planners and corporate institutions today are forging alliances in the U.S. that have dramatic and destructive global impact. Moving beyond lament, Taylor also leaves readers with a new romance of revolutionary traditions and a new more radical liberalism, revitalizing American visions of spirit that are both prophetic and public for U.S. residents today.

Drawing on the Bible and the Western history of ideas, Oliver and Joan Lockwood O'Donovan explore key Christian voices on "the political" - political action, political institutions, and political society. Covered here are Bonaventure, Thomas, Ockham, Wycliff, Erasmus, Luther, Grotius, Barth, Ramsey, and key modern papal encyclicals.

The authors' discussion takes them across a wide range of political concerns, from economics and personal freedom to liberal democracy and the nature of statehood. Ultimately, these insightful essays point to political judgment as the strength of the past theological tradition and its eclipse as the weakness of present political thought.

America is in the throes of a cultural war--one that threatens us from within and without. So-called "progressive" individuals and organizations are falsely using the words of our founding fathers to achieve the antithesis of their design for our nation. The first Americans sought freedom of religion; today we face freedom from religion. the framers of the constitution sought liberty; modern interpretations promote licentiousness. The early settlers believed in absolute morality; today's liberals advocate relative morality. This book offers encouragement about God's providential hand on our nation--and hope that it's not too late to save. The authors provide a specific blueprint to preserve and restore our country to its original intent. In three section (Where We Came From, Where We Are, Where We Are Going), they offer concrete examples from history, in-depth analysis of current condition, and strategies for developing "a new birth of freedom."

The end of the Cold War has brought about more than the triumph of some political ideologies and the disappearance of others. Rather, the collapse of communism has created a vacuum being filled by various alternative visions, ranging from ethnic nationalism to individualistic liberalism. But political ideologies are not merely a matter of government efficacy. Rather, political ideologies are intrinsically and inescapably religious - each carries certain assumptions about the nature of reality, individuals and society, as well as a particular vision for the common good. These fundamental beliefs transcend the political sphere, and the astute Christian observer should thus discern the subtle ways in which ideologies are rooted in idolatrous worldviews. In this comprehensive study, political scientist David Koyzis surveys the key political ideologies of our era, including liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, democracy and socialism. Each philosophy is given careful analysis and fair critique, unpacking the worldview issues inherent to each and pointing out essential strengths and weaknesses. Koyzis concludes by proposing alternative models that flow out of Christianity's historic engagement with the public square, retrieving approaches that hold promise for the complex political realities of the twenty-first century.

Modern Fascism: The Threat to the Judeo-Christian WorldviewModern Fascism: The Threat to the Judeo-Christian Worldview

Dr. Veith shows how fascism is shaping society, unwittingly as well as knowingly. He carefully clarifies fascism's relation to other ideas that also mold our thinking. Most important, he skillfully and convincingly combines historical narrative, cultural criticism, and theological analysis, offering guidance and hope for those jostled and shaken by ideological crosscurrents.

The author also exposes the fallacy in the criticism that belief in theological dogma inhibits an open-ended search for knowledge and truth. He convincingly demonstrates that Christian theology provides a useful framework for acquiring and for integrating knowledge and doesn't stifle the pursuit of truth. Dr. Veith exposes, explains, and counsels without dogmatically prescribing responses.

This book clearly defines fascism as a complex core of ideas that
  • exalts the nation-state or race
  • disregards the individual and the individual's rights
  • employs thought control and strict regimentation
  • disregards moral objectivity.

Someday soon, you might wake up to the call to prayer from a muezzin. Europeans already are. And liberals will still tell you that "diversity is our strength"--while Talibanic enforcers cruise Greenwich Village burning books and barber shops, the Supreme Court decides sharia law doesn't violate the "separation of church and state," and the Hollywood Left decides to give up on gay rights in favor of the much safer charms of polygamy. If you think this can't happen, you haven't been paying attention. The future, as Steyn shows, belongs to the fecund and the confident. And the Islamists are both, while the West--wedded to a multiculturalism that undercuts its own confidence, a welfare state that nudges it toward sloth and self-indulgence, and a childlessness that consigns it to oblivion--is looking ever more like the ruins of a civilization.

Europe, laments Steyn, is almost certainly a goner. The future, if the West has one, belongs to America alone--with maybe its cousins in brave Australia. But America can survive, prosper, and defend its freedom only if it continues to believe in itself, in the sturdier virtues of self-reliance (not government), in the centrality of family, and in the conviction that our country really is the world's last best hope.

Survey: 16 Percent
of Science Teachers
are Creationists

According to a recent national survey, 16 percent of U.S. science teachers are creationists, the Christian Post reports. The study, conducted by faculty at Pennsylvania State University, found that creationism continues to be taught in many classrooms despite judicial blocks. A majority of the almost 1,000 teachers surveyed said that they spent at least three to 10 hours of class time covering evolution, while a quarter of those surveyed said they also taught creationism and intelligent design - about half of whom said they believed these to be "valid, scientific alternative to Darwinian explanations for the origin of species." Four states have passed "Academic Freedom" bills protecting teachers' and students'rights to challenge Darwinism without fear of backlash.
