Born in Hamburg (1926), Moltmann was deeply affected by his experience as a prisoner during World War II.  Not surprisingly, Moltmann offers many valuable insights by focusing his theology on suffering, and the passivity of God, from which he generates a surprisingly positive and optimistic notion of Christian hope. Moltmann's most significant theological contributions including his provision for a restored eschatology  (Theology of Hope, 1967), to his restructuring of the doctrine of God to include suffering (The Crucified God, 1973), and his social doctrine of the Trinity (The Trinity and the Kingdom, 1981). Continuing to influence theological thought and methodology, Moltmann ecumenism and constructive theological endeavors; he remains one of the giants in modern theology as well as a leading source of creative theological reflection.

In Theology of Hope, Moltmann argued that the foundation of Christian theology and faith is the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Yet this resurrection is more particularly the resurrection of the crucified Christ, and the resurrection cannot be understood with this qualifier. He writes, “The theology of Easter hope must be changed into the theology of the cross, if it is to set our feet on the ground of the reality of the death of Christ and our own death.” (185) It is the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus that allows for his resurrection to be a statement of God for us, because in the cross God has taken the full suffering of creation into his own experience. Theology has for too long operated with the assumption that God is impassible, meaning that God cannot suffer because he is perfect and complete. This has led, Moltmann argues, to a view of God that is detached from creation and human experience. In reality, God is deeply affected by His creation, and the crucifixion is the statement of God’s commitment to what he has created. It is in the crucifixion that God receives the deepest impress by creation on his own character.

In his previous two books, Theology of Hope and The Crucified God, Moltmann organized his theological reflection by two foci, hope and the suffering of God. Now in The Church in the Power of the Spirit, Moltmann focuses on church reform to meet the needs of our suffering world. Theology, Moltmann argues, must be continually redefined in relationship to the crises of the day. This book shows Moltmann’s use and appreciation of liberation theology when he argues that the work of God is with the poor, suffering and oppressed of the world. This shapes and defines the church’s calling. “This book,” Moltmann writes, “sets the doctrine of the church and the sacraments in the perspective of the Holy Spirit.” The doctrine of the Spirit has faded in the western church since its split with the Eastern Church in 1054. Moltmann reclaims the doctrine of the Spirit as a way to understand the calling and power of the church, the community of God’s people.

Moltman continues his project of making theology relevant to its context by developing what he calls ‘an ecological doctrine of creation’. Stemming from platonic thought, Christian theology has understood creation in a fundamentally dualistic way. From the dualism of body and soul to the dualism of creation and creator, theology has denigrated physical reality and subordinated it to spiritual reality. This has led human beings to dominate and exploit the physical creation, and created the present ecological crisis. This, Moltmann argues, should be overcome through a new understanding of God and creation which sees the deep and abiding connection between the two. Creation exists in God and God dwells in creation, and the final transformation of heaven and earth promises a full indwelling of God in creation and creation in God, a time when God will truly be “all in all”. Moltmann takes up the complex issues of God’s decision to create and the space and time of creation, attempting to maintain the creator/ creature distinction while pushing for the idea of perichoresis, or mutual indwelling, between God and creation. Perhaps most striking in this volume is Moltmann’s use of Isaac Luria’s concept of zimsum to describe God’s self-limitation in the creation event. Essentially, Moltmann argues, if God is omnipresent then there is no room for the creation. God must withdraw himself in order to create ‘space’ for a creation to exist. This act of self-limitation is God’s first act of self-humiliation, prefiguring the profoundest self-humiliation of God in the cross of Christ. God in Creation is a provocative restatement of the doctrine of creation intended to overcome the destructive relationship of humanity over and against the natural world.

In this volume, Moltmann tries “to grasp [Christ] dynamically, in the forward movement of God’s history with the world.” (xiii). He is critical of both the ancient cosmological paradigm for Christology from the patristic period and of the anthropological paradigm from the enlightenment. He articulates a new Christology, which he calls a ‘differentiated cosmic Christology’ that embraces the eschatological and pneumatological focus of his earlier work. Here Christ is understood as fully human, endowed with the Spirit and led towards his messianic calling. Jesus, for Moltmann, is “as yet only the messiah on the way and the messiah in his becoming.” (139) His new cosmic Christology focuses in the end on ‘the Cosmic Christ’ who is the ground of creation; the whole creation exists through, in and for Christ, so the ‘way of Jesus Christ’ promises the final eschatological path of creation.0 This volume offers a challenge for evangelicals in Moltmann’s articulation of the birth of Christ and the resurrection. Moltmann views the resurrection not as historical but ‘more than historical’. By this he means that the resurrection is in reality an eschatological event that is real in its fullest sense not in the history of Jesus Christ but in the history of God revealed in the eschaton. The resurrection is the promise of God that death has been defeated and that we have hope in a resurrection after death.

This new collection of essays by one of the world's most prestigious religious thinkers examines Moltmann's long-time interest in modern science from a theological perspective. Moltmann probes the compatibility between science and religious assumptions, emphasizing the positive side of scientific advancement while calling for wisdom to play a guiding role in its implementation. Although the Christian tradition has often seen a polarizing split between natural theology and special revelation, Moltmann envisions harmonization between the two, as scientists and theologians alike are each placed on the path toward wisdom.

This volume begins with an analysis of the religious, political and ecological dilemmas of the twentieth century and asks, “Who is God for the world today?” The secular world of the enlightenment promised grand utopias through the power of technology, but in light of the crises of our times these promises prove false. Moltmann argues that only a realistic messianic hope can save modern society from despair. His theology is therefore a political theology and an ecological theology. Moltmann writes, “The founders of the modern age thought of a new, glorious era for the whole human race; but we are surviving on islands of prosperity planted in a sea of mass misery.”

In June 1996, to celebrate Jurgen Moltmann's seventieth birthday, a remarkable group of theologians, both Catholic and Protestant, gathered in Tubingen. They spent the day discussing, before a large audience, how their theology had changed or not changed over the previous thirty years. This book is a record of what they said, together with the text of a subsequent television broadcast and an assessment of the day by a distinguished journalist. The participants include: Jurgen Moltmann, his wife Elisabeth Moltmann-Wendel, Eberhard Jungel, Dorothee Solle, Johann Baptist Metz, Norbert Greinacher, Jorg Zink, Philip Potter, and Hans Kung. They cover many areas of theology, from systematic theology to feminist theology to liberation theology. They also show in a striking way how their careers were stamped by the war and the subsequent divisionof Germany, lending an amazing personal touch to their accounts. Jurgen Moltmann is Emeritus Professor of Systematic Theology in the Protestant Theological Faculty at the University of Tubingen.
