History requires not only an understanding of the diverse cultures that make up the foundation of the past, but also an empathetic perception and understanding of events as they were experienced. This Far by Faith provides such an approach through flexible lessons that focus on the presence and contributions of African-Americans and others who are often glossed over or left out of the history books entirely.

Using the Charlotte Mason approach, this homeschool curriculum will fill a vital gap in middle-school-aged students' knowledge of American history. Using the first five volumes of Joy Hakim's A History of US as a spine, and complimented by an extensive suggested reading list that includes both readers and read-aloud books, this curriculum provides a Christian emphasis on history that highlights God's providence without minimizing the atrocities committed in the past.

A list of suggested books is provided, along with weekly unit-by-unit suggested reading plans (with page/chapter numbers) for a 5-day/week schedule.

Units are organized by time frame and feature integrated directions that note what students should be reading, questions to ask students, teacher notes, activities, bullet-pointed lists of important points, and the weekly schedule.

Presenting a holistic picture of American history, "This Far by Faith: Volume 1" units cover the Native Americans' interactions with others, early colonization, the establishment of the United States, slavery, resistance, and more.

48 pages, spiralbound paperback. Middle School grades.

There's more to American history than the standard highlights, and there's more to African-American history than George Washington Carver and Rosa Parks. Dig deeper into the past and find a richer, broader, and more accurate view of the whole of the American story with the Our History, HIS-Story curriculum.

Designed using the Charlotte Mason approach, this homeschool curriculum will fill a vital gap in e lementary-aged students' knowledge of American history, and will provide African-American children with a sense of who they are spiritually and historically. Based around a suggested reading list, this is a flexible curriculum that could easily serve as a launching pad for a timeline or notebooking-based course.

A list of suggested books and other needed resources is provided at the beginning of the guide, along with a suggested reading plan (with page numbers) for a 4-day/week schedule.

Units clearly identify the time period or event being studied, and list:

  • The primary learning topic
  • Ideas for the unit
  • Instructions on what pages to read in the appropriate books
  • Activities with instructions and materials-required lists
  • A shaded box with questions to think and talk about

Presenting a holistic picture of American history that includes African-Americans, Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and Latino/a people, Volume 2 units cover the years 1866-present, including the role of African-Americans in the westward expansion, American culture in the early 1900s, women and minorities using collectivism to organize and gain power, the role of African-Americans in increasing their socio-economic position, the Great Depression, the Japanese and World War II, and more.
