These Bible studies are designed to introduce some of the key writers, preachers and teachers who have shaped our Christian thought over the centuries. Each guide has an introduction to the life and thought of a particular writer and six study sessions. The studies each have an introduction to the particular themes, selected readings from classic works, and the following components:
  • An excerpt from the original writings.
  • Questions designed to help you explore the themes of the reading.
  • A key Scripture to read and explore inductively. The text picks up on the themes of the study session.
  • Ideas to carry you further and deeper into the themes of the study. Some can be used in a group session; many are for personal use and reflection.
  • Study notes at the end of the guide offer further helps and background on the study questions. A bibliography is also provided.

In 1536 Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada entered the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation at Avila. She sought closeness with the Lord through the liturgy of the church and her own spontaneous communication with God. About 1555 she began to experience what she considered God's inner voice, and began to have visions and revelations. She wrote of her private experiences because she was commanded to do so by her superiors. The works we will study from - Interior Castles, The Way of Perfection, and the Life of Teresa - are still well known and have served as nourishment to many who, without her aid, would still be beginners in the life of prayer.

Universally studied by today's students of theology as the most complete statement of Reformed theology at its birth, The Institutes of the Christian Religion, was originally composed of six chapters and a preface to King Francis I explaining that the Protestant faith was indeed Christian. Excerpts from Calvin's New Testament Commentaries, and some of his letters are also used in this guide to study Calvin's teachings on how we can know God, the mystery of prayer, the role of God and of humans in the process of redemption, how to prepare for death and the life beyond, what the church is all about, and how to practice what we believe.

When Martin Luther encountered practices in the church that he felt controverted Scripture, he could not keep silent. Luther publicly raged against what he believed were false teachings. Fortunately for Luther, many German princes and their subjects had grown weary of being abused by the pope and emperor alike; thus a lone protesting monk became the catalyst to the Protestant Reformation. Study the free gift of God that comes through faith, how to overcome sin, the importance of Jesus' divinity, why Christians do good works, what to think about predestination and free will, and how to prepare for spiritual battle using excerpts from Luther's various writings.
