Alison Monaghan discovers proof of her husband's infidelity in a photograph with a mysterious woman, she must decide how to confront Frank when he returns home from work. Despite the influence of her best friend Valerie, a strong Christian, Alison remains aloof from God and is determined to handle this crisis her own way. But Alison may not get that chance. Frank never makes it home. Soon his body is found on a lonely back-country road in antebellum Weathersby Historic Park where Frank served on the board of directors and where Alison, with a degree in landscape design, was a volunteer garden docent. Homicide detective Mike Barefoot, a Cherokee native from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, immediately puts Alison at the top of his suspect list. He finds himself drawn to her--and not just because she had motive for the crime. As an army veteran, Mike usually keeps his emotional walls high. And as a detective, he knows not to get involved with murder suspects.

 Christianbook.com Interview with Lisa Carter

What is your favorite Bible verse, Translation too, please! And why?

I Thessalonians 5:24 Faithful is He who calls you and He will also bring it to pass. (NASB)

Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am a wife and mother. I have a Master's in Education and I've taught at the college, secondary and middle school levels. I love to quilt, sing in the choir, read, teach Precepts Bible Study and travel. I'm always up for an adventure and writing has been a wonderful adventure. In fact, my daughter asked me the other day what I'd wanted to be when I was her age. Without having to stop and think, I immediately blurted out, "Indiana Jones." She narrowed her eyes and frowned. "But you're a girl, Mom." I nodded. "Yeah," I told her. "I wanted to be the female Indiana Jones." And through my writing, I guess I'm living my dream.

How did you choose the Carolinas as your setting?

I am a native North Carolinian and from the mountains to the sea, I'm so proud to call North Carolina home.

What was your motive to write Carolina Reckoning?

My parents divorced when I was nine years old. I was angry at everyone, most of all God, when my world fell apart. I wrestled with feelings of abandonment, forgiveness, and faith. Like Alison, I longed to find Someone upon which I could rely. And at the foot of the Cross, I discovered a Father God who is always faithful and true. He is enough for every need, past, present and future.

What is your favorite genre to write?

I love the action and adventure of suspense and the romance of two people finding in each other more than they ever dreamed possible.

Is there a person or situation in your life that inspired you to write Carolina Reckoning?

My mother has always been my strongest supporter and encourager. Her own fictional stories of adventure involving my brother and I as the main heroes carried us through many a long family trip as children and fueled the writer within me. Her life story—of courage, independence and faith—inspired Carolina Reckoning and is a testament that God is, indeed, sufficient for every need.

How much research did Carolina Reckoning take?

Many years ago I had the privilege of working as a docent at an antebellum historic park. This insight into the inner workings of historic preservation caused the romantic suspense writer in me to wonder, "What would happen if a murder occurred in this uniquely Southern setting?"

What are the some of the most interesting facts that you learned while researching and writing Carolina Reckoning?

I was very fortunate to interview a sheriff's deputy who provided an amazing personal testimony of law enforcement through a Christian cop's point of view. His struggles to balance the worst of human nature with his own walk of faith made me so thankful for the dedicated men and women who keep our homes, streets, cities and families safe.

Theirs is often a thankless job and the toll the profession often wreaks upon their family life and marriages requires extraordinary commitment and courage. And on the lighter side, he allowed me to shoot a Taser. Which was a blast. Literally.

What other new writing projects do you have on the horizon?

Aloha Rose is a contemporary romantic adventure set on the Big Island of Hawaii. Aloha Rose releases November 2013 and is part of Abingdon's Quilts of Love series where "every quilt has a story."

Two other novels of romantic suspense release in 2014 with Abingdon. And as always, new characters, dilemmas, and romance are percolating in my head.

What message would you like your readers to take from reading Carolina Reckoning?

Alison wrestles with issues of forgiveness and faith in a world where everyone she’s ever loved has abandoned or betrayed her. Like many, she longs to find Someone, anyone, she can rely upon. Carolina Reckoning is for those who’ve felt alone or faced an unknown future—anyone who has ever felt abandoned and betrayed by a friend, spouse or family member. Carolina Reckoning is, in a small way, the story of my life, too. My own journey, in the midst of pain and disillusionment, toward a Father God and Savior who is always faithful and true, enough for every need.

What organizations are you involved with?

I am a member of ACFW, RWA and Sisters in Crime.

What are some of the challenges you face as an author?

My greatest challenge as an author is to juggle my responsibilities as a wife and mother with my writing schedule. I'm thankful for a helpful husband and understanding daughters who pitch in with dinner when deadlines loom.

Who is the person who most influences your writing?

I have learned so much about the craft of writing from James Scott Bell. Alton Gansky, Edie Melson and the other faculty members at the Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference are the reason I am now a published author.

What aspects of being a writer do you enjoy the most?

I love interacting with lovers of books—whether writers or readers.

What do you do to get away from it all?

I love to travel, which usually prompts new story ideas. Often I have to get out of town to truly "get away from" all the responsibilities I juggle.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

My ultimate desire is to glorify God, through my writing and through my life. And I hope also that readers will enjoy Carolina Reckoning—a little bit of sweet tea and a whole lot of magnolia.
