What inspired you to write this novel?
I love the North Carolina coast, but particularly the feel of being on the Outer Banks. I’ve had a few vacations there and find it a beautiful place in every season.
Even a novice can succeed with flying a kite on the coast of Buxton or Waves. I also think that when we focus on dreams, like Jackie’s to run a bed and breakfast, a coastal town is key. Dreams and the coastäčthat has a nice ring to it. Besides the setting, the quirky southern characters inside my head inspired me.
Any deleted scenes you’d like to share now? (Please set it up before you share it.)
I had a funeral scene, but that was deleted. Also, one with a picnic on the beach after the funeral. Some other scenes were cut, too, but my memory is getting bad, so who can remember which ones they were?
What is your favorite Christmas recipe?
Fruitcake! While many are complaining about the holiday cake, I can’t get enough of it. If you get one and don’t want it, think of sending it to me.
Can you share a favorite memory from the holidays?
The Christmas I longed for a bike was magical. My parents hid the bike from me in the shed until Christmas morning. I had no idea I was going to get it, and had almost given up hope. Finally, there it was, glistening under the tree lights. Of course, I had the flu that Christmas, so was only allowed to ride it for about ten minutes and then I was sent back to the couch to rest. I brought it back inside the living room so that I could admire it. When no one was looking, I got off the couch to polish the handlebars.
What is your favorite Christmas song/hymn?
“Joy to the World,” because it makes me joyful to know Jesus has come to us.
Does your family have any holiday traditions?
My husband makes lemon and mince tarts, using his British mother’s old family recipe.
This is a big ordeal as he measures flour and sugar and rolls out the crusts. The kitchen is a mess, but the treats are worth the wait. We host a Christmas Eve event at our house every year where the tarts and other special foods are served, including something Asian like wasabi peas. We take a break from eating to play the White Elephant present gameäč
things I have purchased at the Dollar Store and wrapped up.
What is your favorite holiday movie?
A Christmas Carol, because I love the idea that we can change for the better as Scrooge didäčit is not too late.
Do you have a favorite holiday book?
The Night Before Christmas, because of the excitement I still feel as I did when it was read to me as a child growing up in Japan.
