An excellent tool to help teach your little girls about perseverance, this wonderfully illustrated book follows Gabby, God's Little Angel, as she tries to keep up with her charge Sophie, who always manages to find trouble in everything she does. In this second book, Sophie is attempting to help others, by washing the family dog, and helping her little brother to read but when things start to go wrong she is ready to quit trying. Gabby must fly to Sophie's rescue to help encourage her to keep trying and to teach her what the Bible says about perseverance: "We must not become tired of doing good. We will receive our harvest of eternal life at the right time if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9 NCV)

1. Where did you get the idea for this series (Gabby, God’s Little Angel)?

The idea came one day when I was reading this verse in Matthew’s gospel,

“Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10 NKJV)

I love this truth that even for children who face tremendous struggle here on earth, they have an angel watching over them who lives in the presence of the Father.

2. How does this series differ from your other series for girls, Gigi God’s Little Princess?

The Gigi series was written out of a desire for little girls to know that they are loved and treasured by God no matter what they look like on the outside. Most of us don’t look like the typical Disney princess but the truth is far greater, we are beloved daughters of the King of Kings.

This new Gabby series is to show how great God’s care and protection over His children is. There’s a lot of “angel” stuff in the market place but scripture teaches that angels never invite attention to themselves, they always point back to God.

3. What do you hope your young readers take away from this story?

I pray that they will begin to understand that their life matters to God and that He sends angels to watch over them and protect them. I pray too that their would be the beginning of an understanding of the spiritual realm and no matter what they can see with their eyes or hear with their ears, God is with them.

4. Do you hope that parents learn anything from this story or through reading this story to their children?

One of the greatest gifts of childhood is to be read to. I want to encourage parents to sit down with their children and read instead of the temptation to simply sit them down in front of the television. I have received a lot of mail from moms who told me that God spoke to them through the Gigi books, reminding them that they are loved just as they are. That is my prayer with Gabby too. I pray that moms and dads would remember that our God never takes His eyes off us and He has promised to never give us more than we can bear.

5. Do you have any advice for parents on how to read this book with their children?

I would say, read until they have a question and then linger there. Often picture books are a doorway to teach spiritual truth.

6. Do you find it difficult to come up with new ideas and lessons for kids to learn through your books?

I live in a neighborhood full of kids of all ages and our kitchen is usually full of boys and girls from 5 to 15 so storylines are not had to come up with! Also when I am learning a new spiritual truth I look for ways to make that understandable for children.

7. Do you have a favorite book that you have written? And why?

For children, it would be the “Gigi, God’s Little Princess Devotional Bible.” I love the letters I receive and stories I hear of how God has used this in a child’s life.

8. What was your favorite book when you were a child?

Growing up my favorite book was by Danish poet and author, Hans Christian Anderson, “The Ugly Duckling.” There was something about the message of that book that touched me deeply. As an adult I still love it and have a copy in my office at home. It is such a tale of redemption. Just as the “duck” was destined to be a beautiful swan so too we are transformed by the love of God.

9. Where did you get the idea to transition from writing books for adults to writing stories for children?

One day as I dropped Christian off at school I saw a dad hug his little girl and tell her she was beautiful. Her hair was a mess and she had her cardigan on inside out but her daddy told her she was beautiful and she believed him. I went right to Starbucks and sat down and wrote the first “Gigi, God’s Little Princess book.”

10. What is your favorite Bible verse?

I have many :) But I begin every morning with Psalm 143:8,

"Cause me to hear Your loving kindness in the morning, for in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk,
For I lift up my soul to You."
